			The [[Academy of Aether]] stands alone from the other four [[Wizard]] academies. Students here do not study the elements or the Draconic organoids that manipulate them; instead, they study the true nature of the universe that permits these organoids to have an effect. The [[Sop]]hists and [[Wizard]]s first had to agree on what was being affected, which is the fabric of the [[Un]]iverse: what they eventually came to call the Aether.

			The Draconic organoids bend and warp the Aether, they have deduced. This bending and shaping is performed in multiple ways by a single organoid. In other words, the isolated effect of an organoid, such as creating a singularity, is the result of several distinct effects upon the Aether. At the Academy, they teach the minutiae of these effects and how to derive entirely new Powers from the phenomena that facilitate others.

			For anyone believing that this is complicated, they are correct. The [[School]] of Aether restricts its enrollment to the most advanced minds on the continent of [[Otan]]. Without capturing the intelligence and creativity of students from other academies who were discontent with their basic understanding of Draconic Powers, the Academy would never have been formed.

			To work out their theories, the Academy employs [[Wizard]] Boards: specialized tools featuring graduated colors and a base container filled with multi-colored stones and gems. [[Wizard]]s of the [[Academy of Aether]] can articulate their Powers, or any Power, using the board to notate the individual Aetherial steps. This magical abstraction is similar to how a [[Bard]] might represent musical notes of different pitch and duration by scribing squiggles and blots on papyrus.

			As students advance to the highest levels of the [[Academy of Aether]], so too do their [[Wizard]] boards. Their personal boards become entirely unique to them. As their theories of magic progress, [[Wizard]]s will add leaves and stones to their boards to encompass new branches of thought. A [[Wizard]] who has learned all the powers offered by the [[Academy of Aether]] is only at the beginning of their journey, as they are entrusted to continue in the advancement of the Academy's path.

			The [[Academy of Aether]], like all [[Wizard]] Academies, maintains an exceptionally strict and formal work and study environment. While a budding student might witness [[Wizard]]s going about their duties, making casual inquiries is pointless. Academy classes require formal enrollment through a collegiate academy, and tuition must be paid upfront before the registrar accepts a student.

			Learning an [[Academy of Aether]] Power involves about four-fifths documenting and figuring on [[Wizard]] boards and one-fifth laboratory assignments. A full day of study typically lasts 8 to 10 hours, though these studious researchers soon become addicted to their [[Wizard]] boards. The intense reading, writing, and [[Wizard]] boarding required would drive a typical [[Otan]] citizen insane.

			The Aether [[Wizard]]s' studies rarely appear to demonstrate any immediate benefits. When an exercise on a [[Wizard]] board fails, there is no inherent way to tell if the calculations merely needed adjustment or if a completely different approach was required. Instructors tend to shrug and direct the student to start over, rarely offering feedback unless the student has attempted something truly unique. Yet, unique approaches to old problems can become world-changing events.

			Powers typically manifest in Aether students during laboratory time as they attempt to execute the models they have built on their boards. They will experience a sudden intuition, and without any prior warning, the Power reveals itself. Students who unlock their Power ahead of their peers are still required to continue their studies until the course concludes on its regular schedule. Only then will they be granted their certification and permission to graduate to the next course in the curriculum.

			Students must pay for their courses in the local currency before attending classes. Promising students from impoverished backgrounds are sometimes sponsored by local political leaders in an effort to assure the public that the state's magical defenses remain a priority. Alternatively, some collegiates may accept lower-income [[Wizard]]s in exchange for labor, which can take various forms.
