The Aelfes (Homo Aestheticus) occupy a singular place in the history of Otan, as they were the first of the sentient strains to be created and scattered across the continent by Woden the All-Father. Unlike the humans who followed, the Aelfes were endowed with an innate, hypersensitive connection to beauty. However, this gift became the source of their greatest tragedy. The two primary nation-states of the Aelfes, Aelfgarad and Aelfwode, govern this aesthetic drive in mirror-opposite ways. In the coastal realm of Aelfgarad, the Friggaelfes have institutionalized their love of art through the Council of the Arts. This body makes nearly every significant decision for the nation, ensuring that the growth of their cities and the laws of their land adhere to a strict, curated beauty. While a King or Queen exists to handle the few matters beneath the Council's notice, the society is fundamentally one of collective deliberation. Decisions too small for the High Council are delegated to smaller, local councils, ensuring that almost no action in Aelfgarad is ever the result of a single, unvetted individual's impulse.
In stark contrast, the Wodaelfes of Aelfwode have a government that is almost invisible by design. While the Aelfes are the progenitors of the sentient strains, their physical form is a subtle, refined variation of the human baseline. To a casual observer, an Aelf could easily be mistaken for a human at a distance, as they possess the same bipedal, simian-derived structure. However, upon a second look, the distinctions become clear. Aelfes are generally more slender and lithe than their human cousins, possessing a skeletal structure that favors grace over raw bulk.
Their most iconic Aelfen feature is their ears, which are smaller than a human's but taper into delicate, elegant points, a physical trait often mirrored in the fine, angular features of their faces. Biologically, Aelfes are remarkably similar to humans, functioning as omnivores capable of processing both plant and animal proteins, though their cultural preferences often dictate their diet (with Wodaelfes favoring the raw bounty of the woods and Friggaelfes preferring the curated delicacies of the sea).
In terms of physical capability, Aelfes possess a natural agility that slightly exceeds the human norm. They move with a fluid economy of motion that makes them exceptional climbers, dancers, and archers. However, it is important to note that this is a refined biological leaning rather than a supernatural power; while the average Aelf is swifter and more sure-footed than the average human, they do not possess "super-human" speed, and a highly trained human athlete can certainly rival them in a feat of coordination.
Their appearance is also defined by a sensory "vibrancy" that sets them apart. Their skin tones and hair colors generally follow the human spectrum, but their eyes often possess a clarity and depth of color that humans find arresting, ranging from the deep moss-greens of the Wodaelf forest-dwellers to the shimmering, sea-glass blues of the Friggaelf coastal tribes. This aesthetic "polish" is the physical manifestation of their strain’s purpose: they were not designed to be the strongest or the most pervasive, but to be the most attuned to the visual and tactile wonders of Otan.

| |||
While the Aelfes are broadly defined by their "baseline" biology, two specialized sub-lineages possess extraordinary natural and latent abilities that set them apart from the rest of the species. The Brimaelfes, a specialized maritime offshoot, have evolved, or perhaps were gifted, functional gills along their neck and ribcage, allowing them to breathe underwater indefinitely. This makes them the undisputed masters of Otan’s reefs and kelp forests, capable of maintaining ancestral estates beneath the waves.
Even more mysterious are the Wyrmaelfes, individuals who carry the dormant "dragon seed" within their bloodline. In rare instances, this seed can be triggered, causing the Aelf to undergo a slow, metamorphic transition. They begin to sprout iridescent scales, their eyes narrow into vertical slits, and their internal heat rises until they acquire the full physical and elemental traits of the Aydahar. This transformation is viewed with equal parts awe and terror, as it represents a literal bridge between the Aelfen and Draconic strains.
Beyond these biological outliers, perhaps the most pervasive Aelfen "ability" is a psychological one: the masterful projection of superiority. Because they are the supreme authorities on aestheticism, they have successfully cultivated a global perception that they are naturally superior in all other categories. It is commonly believed by the other nations that Aelfes are inherently more agile, resilient, wise, and even psychically gifted than any other strain of man.
While the Sigis Sophists and Karazalik witches can prove this is patently untrue, an Aelf's bone is no harder than a human's, and their wit is no sharper than a Dweorg's, the typical Aelf will never deny a single jot of this reputation. They wrap themselves in an aura of effortless excellence, using their refined manners and breathtaking fashion to convince the world that they are a "higher" species. In the theater of Otan, the Aelfes have realized that if you look like a god, most people will treat you like one.

For the Aelfes, as with all the inhabitants of Otan, history began in the first year IM (Incipit Mundi). They awoke from the Great Erasure not as a unified people, but as two distinct nations already physically and philosophically divided. The shock of the Erasure left them with no memory of their origin, only the overwhelming "Aesthetic Pulse" that drove the Wodaelfes into the primeval cathedrals of the forest and the Friggaelfes to the shimmering marble of the coasts. This immediate divergence prevented the formation of a singular Aelfen empire, ensuring that the two tribes would develop as separate, often distant, cousins.
For over two centuries, the Aelfes remained largely insular, viewing the burgeoning human nations with a mix of pity and detached curiosity. This changed abruptly when the Grendel War began to spill out of the northern human territories. As Grendel warbands ravaged settlements in the North, the Wodaelfes of the Aelfwode faced a grim choice. Though they often viewed human expansion as a blight, they recognized that the Grendel’s sheer destructive power posed a greater threat to the "Wodenic Beauty" of the natural world.
The Wodaelfes eventually entered the fray on the side of the human alliance. While human historians record this as an act of selfless compassion, Aelfen chronicles suggest a more pragmatic motivation: the realization that if the human shield fell, the Aelfwode would be the next victim of Grendel aggression. Regardless of the motive, their archers and scouts proved pivotal in the conflict.
The [[ | Since the signing of the Concord of Kala Astanals, the old Aelfen isolationism has begun to thaw. The Aelfes and Humans are now less reluctant to trade and interact, with Aelfen art and craft becoming highly sought-after status symbols in human cities like Kala Astanals and Jagalik. Trade has begun to flow between Human and Aelf nations, sparking a renaissance in manufacturing on both sides.

Description:The Friggaelfes (🔊 FRIGG-alf) grew distant from their Wodaelfen cousins due to a difference in their art-driven aesthetic sensibilities. They reside primarily in Aelfgarad.
Overview:The Friggaelfes are the primary artistic and cultural branch of the Aelf strain (*Homo Aestheticus*), defined by a fundamental philosophical schism that likely occurred before the Great Erasure. While their kin, the Wodaelfes, believe that the natural world created by Woden the All-Father is the pinnacle of beauty, the Friggaelfes maintain that art is the dominant aesthetic.
To a Friggaelf, nature provides only the raw tools; it is through sentient craftsmanship and the homage paid to the goddess Frigg that true perfection is achieved. This dedication to manufactured beauty is so deeply ingrained that even the loss of historical records during the Great Erasure could not diminish their innate drive to create.
In practice, Friggaelfen society is entirely structured around this pursuit of aesthetics, with its government, the Council of the Arts, prioritizing visual and symbolic excellence above nearly all else. This cultural mandate extends even to the most utilitarian tasks; for instance, a military fortification in their northwestern nation of Aelfgarad is rarely built for defense alone. Instead, engineers are required to ensure that blockades and defensive positions are "visually interesting," treating a battlefield as a canvas for symbolic expression.
This fixation on high art and rigid theory eventually led to further internal rifts, such as the Dunaelfes, who broke away to pursue a more whimsical style of creativity.

===[[ | Description:The Wyrmaelfes (🔊 VERM-alf) are a variety of the Friggaelfes, but infected by Draconic Essence. They resist becoming full Aydahar through prayer and force of will.
The [[ | |||
Overview:The Wyrmaelfes are the tragic scions of a spiritual and physical blight known as "dragon seed". While humans who are tainted by draconic essence succumb entirely, warping into the fully draconic strain known as the Aydahar, the Aelfen spirit is resilient enough to forestall this corruption. The result is a lineage caught in a permanent state of transition.
The | |||
Wyrmaelfes are not marked by hardened scales and transformative bone structures, but rather more subtle changes. For the Wyrmaelf, their very blood is a battlefield where Aelfen grace and draconic savagery fight for every inch of their identity. The visible change is often limited to a violet complexion and snow-white hair.
Their inherent duality defines Wyrmaelf society as one of simultaneous pride and self-loathing. They are a people born of a violation, possessing a strength and longevity that make them formidable warriors, yet they view these gifts as symptoms of a terminal rot. While a small, radical few "accept the fire" and willingly descend into the Aydahar form, the majority live in a state of hyper-vigilance.
Wyrmaelfes treat their draconic kin with a complex mixture of reverence and bitter resentment, acknowledging the power of dragons while loathing the "seed" that stole their purity. To survive the daily encroachment of the beast, the Wyrmaelfes have turned to Frigg with a desperation that borders on the fanatical. They do not worship for mere comfort; they pray for stasis. They use their religion as a shield against their own marrow, and their rituals are designed to cleanse the spirit in hopes of one day purging the flesh.

[[ | Description:The Wodaelfes (🔊 WOAH-dalf) grew distant from their Friggaelfen cousins due to an aesthetic rift. They prefer natural beauty to anything artistic. They reside primarily in Aelfwode.
Overview:The Wodaelfes are the traditionalist heart of the Aelf strain, defined by their unwavering devotion to the natural world. While their cousins, the Friggaelfes, believe that art is the dominant aesthetic, the Wodaelfes maintain that nothing on Otan is more beautiful than the raw, untamed creation of Woden the All-Father. This philosophical rift led to a total separation between the tribes long before the Great Erasure, leaving the Wodaelfes to dwell in the deep forests while their kin moved to the northern coasts.
Even with their history lost to the Great Erasure, Wodaelfes woke with an innate preference for the aesthetics of the wild already etched into their souls. In Wodaelfen society, the "Great Masterpiece" is not something to be built, but something to be protected and inhabited. Their culture is deeply insular and rooted in the ancient groves of their domains, where they live in harmony with the flora and fauna provided by Woden.
Unlike the structured hierarchies of Aelfgarad, Wodaelfen life is governed by the rhythms of the forest, leading many outsiders to view them as primal or mysterious. However, this simplicity is deceptive; they possess a fierce, protective grace and are known to produce "Brutes" who, while strikingly beautiful to behold, are horrifically dangerous when the sanctity of their woods is threatened. Physically, the Wodaelfes mirror the slender, pointed-eared appearance of the Aelf strain, yet they carry a wilder, more organic presence than the curated Friggaelfes.
In the wild, they are often accompanied by the great beasts of the forest, and it is said that their most skilled hunters and warriors can move through the undergrowth with a silence that borders on the supernatural. For a Wodaelf, every tree, river, and mountain is a divine work of art that requires no further refinement from sentient hands. They remain the silent sentinels of Woden’s original vision, preferring the rustle of leaves to the grand spires of the city.

Description:The Dunaelfes (🔊DOON-alf) grew distant from their Aelfen cousins due to a difference in aesthetic sensibilities. They reside primarily in Aelfgarad.
Overview:The Dunaelfes are a striking contrast to their Friggaelf kin, defined by a mahogany-dark complexion and a cultural obsession with the higher aesthetic of engineering. While they share a lineage with the Friggaelfes, the Dunaelfes have turned their intellect away from the sea and toward the forge, the gear, and the blueprint.
They believe that the ultimate expression of Frigg’s wisdom is found in the perfection of the machine. They take delight in transforming raw materials into complex, functional wonders. To a Dunaelf, a well-tuned engine or a perfectly balanced clockwork mechanism is as beautiful as any sunrise.
Living primarily in the industrial and urban hubs of Otan, the Dunaelfes are the preeminent architects and inventors of the realm. Their society is a meritocracy based on technical skill and innovation; status is earned not through land or birthright, but through the efficiency and elegance of one's designs.
They view the Wodaelfes’ "stewardship" as a passive waste of potential, believing instead that the natural world provides the components which sentient minds must refine into a more orderly, productive existence. Their homes are often filled with the rhythmic ticking of prototypes and the low hum of experimental power sources.
Despite their focus on cold iron and brass, the Dunaelfes maintain a deep sense of social duty, often providing the infrastructure. They are known for their aqueducts, bridges, and defensive siege engines, which keep their cousin Aelfen substrains safe. They are the "builders of the framework," providing the skeleton of civilization upon which others live.

Description:The Brimaelfes (🔊BREEM-alf) are the coastal sea Aelfes, who live off the coast of Aelfgarad. Their habitats are primarily underwater, with occasional beach habitats.
Overview:The Brimaelfes are the sovereign masters of the Otan depths, possessing a sleek physiology that mirrors the shifting moods of the sea. From the shimmering teal of a sunlit bay to the deep, ink-like indigo of the abyss, they add an entirely new dimension to what is Aelfen.
Though they are expert swimmers capable of enduring the crushing weight of the deep, they maintain a unique dual nature. They are a people of two worlds, occupying the vast waters between Aelfgarad and Araldar, they are governed by a rigid Monarchy and swearing fealty to a single King or Queen. The royal throne sits within sprawling underwater citadels of glass, pearl, and living coral, serving as the heartbeat of a hidden empire that remains a mystery to those who dwell under the sun.
While these grand cities are submerged, they are designed with a profound understanding of Aelfen comfort. Many districts consist of enclosed air-habitats, pressurized vaults kept dry for those who prefer to use their lungs while they labor at their crafts or retreat into the restorative silence of sleep.
These architectural marvels allow the Brimaelfes to maintain their terrestrial refinements even in the heart of the ocean, creating a culture that is as intellectually sophisticated as it is physically formidable. To a Brimaelf, the "dry" home is a sanctuary where the mind is sharpest, surrounded by the muffled, rhythmic thrum of the exterior currents.
For the Brimaelf, the ocean provides the only aesthetic relevance worth pursuing. They believe that true beauty is not invented by hands, but harvested from the tides; their art, fashion, and architecture are entirely defined by iridescent shell-work, bioluminescent blooms, and the mathematical perfection of reef-growth.
To them, any beauty born of the dry land is static and lifeless, lacking the fluid grace of the water. This singular focus allows them to walk the surface docks of Otan with a regal, detached confidence, knowing that the terrestrial world is merely a shallow shore compared to the infinite, tide-crafted empire they command below.

Soon after their awakening, the species found themselves driven by irreconcilable preferences, leading to a fundamental schism that fractured their civilization into two distinct tribes: the Wodaelfes and the Friggaelfes.
The Wodaelfes represent the traditionalist branch of the species, maintaining a deep, spiritual loyalty to the natural world. They believe that nothing in the universe can surpass the raw, unadulterated beauty of Woden’s original creation. For a Wodaelf, the curve of a root or the dappled light through an ancient canopy is the highest form of perfection. They decry any attempt to "improve" upon nature, viewing human-made structures as scars upon the world. Consequently, they retreated into the deepest forests granted to them by the All-Father, becoming the silent, vigilant guardians of the wild.
In contrast, the Friggaelfes reached a radically different conclusion. They argued that while Woden provided the raw materials, the wood, the stone, and the light, true beauty only emerges when it is filtered through the lens of sentient creativity. To the Friggaelfes, art is the dominant aesthetic of the universe. They believe that a sculpted marble statue or a perfectly composed symphony is objectively superior to a raw mountain or the sound of the wind. This philosophical shift led them away from the shadows of the forest and toward the sun-drenched coastal shores, where they could build white-stone cities that serve as monuments to their own artistic mastery.
This division is not merely a difference of opinion; it is a physical and cultural separation that has lasted since before the Great Erasure. While the Wodaelfes became masters of camouflage, herbalism, and the "Will to Power" over the self in harmony with nature, the Friggaelfes became the premier architects, poets, and philosophers of the coast. Though both strains share the same long-lived, elegant physiology, they now stand as two halves of a broken mirror, each reflecting a different vision of what it means to be a "Homo Aestheticus" in a world that has forgotten its origins.
Society and Culture
For the Aelfes, the pursuit of beauty is not a hobby or a luxury; it is a biological and political mandate. Aelfen society is so heavily vested in the concept of the "Sublime" that their governing bodies prioritize aesthetics above almost all other concerns. Even in the face of dire necessity, the Aelfen mind refuses to separate function from form. If a village were threatened by an impending attack, the defense would be orchestrated with a dual purpose: two parts would be dedicated to the tactical placement of archers and blockades, while a third, equally vital part would be devoted to ensuring those fortifications were "visually interesting." To an Aelf, a victory won through an ugly or graceless defense is a failure of the spirit.
Bound by the belief that the only true aesthetic is that which is produced by nature itself, they are content to let the world take its course without the heavy hand of bureaucracy. There are no councils to debate the "look" of a forest; the forest simply is. This creates a culture of radical individual initiative. When a major decision must be made, a Wodaelf acts on their own intuition and then trusts the outcome to the natural order or the whims of the gods. In Aelfwode, the "perfect" choice is the one that aligns most seamlessly with the wild, requiring no debate or committee to validate its beauty.

Natural and Latent Abilities
History
Since the signing of the Concord of Kala Astanals, the old Aelfen isolationism has begun to thaw.
Aelfen Substrains
Friggaelf Substrain
Wyrmaelf Substrain
Description:The Wyrmaelfes (🔊 VERM-alf) are a variety of the Friggaelfes, but infected by Draconic Essence. They resist becoming full Aydahar through prayer and force of will.
Wodaelf Substrain
Description:The Wodaelfes (🔊 WOAH-dalf) grew distant from their Friggaelfen cousins due to an aesthetic rift.
Dunaelf Substrain
Brimaelf Substrain
