Institute of Fireworks

The most popular of the Tinker schools is the Institute of Fireworks. Students learn about the most visibly potent force on Otan: the power of fire. For a Tinker, fire is a means by which fuel can be turned into dreams. Slow-burning fires provide heat and protection, properly applied, just as fast-burning fires provide thrust and explosions. The clever Tinker knows the right fire for the application.
The Institute of Fireworks teaches powers of intuition for harnessing this force. A burning propellant in a tube might provide too little propulsion to be useful, or it might provide too much propulsion to be contained by the vessel, resulting in a catastrophic explosion. Trial and error would kill an untrained Tinker, but a practitioner with the appropriate powers will know the limits instinctively. Power serves their minds so they can intuit the correct fuel and precise quantity for the job at hand.
While containing and directing fires, small and large, fast and slow, is exciting business, students and even masters of the Institute of Fireworks are not immune to mistakes. The more power they hope to control, the greater the inherent danger, and sometimes lives and limbs are lost in the pursuit of spectacular glory.
Teaching Methods
Tinker schools are strict and no-nonsense, particularly the Institute of Fireworks, where shenanigans can cost lives. They operate as one part classroom instruction and two parts working in the shop, where fuels are prepared and burned according to the specific Power being taught.
The course is paid for through upfront tuition to the school or directly to the instructing Tinker. Favors or other tasks are rarely accepted as barter, though this can sometimes happen when negotiating for the higher Powers. Through the repetition of the rote preparation of fuels, the construction of fuel receptacles, and the performance of proper ignition, the Power eventually manifests in a successful student, granting them the baseline intuition to safely perform the rituals in their own workshops.
