Mastering fire, electricity, and light by replicating draconic biology, Energy Wizards tap into extra-dimensional singularities. They are trained through rigorous, expensive, and highly formal academic schooling.

Training forWizard

Wizards of the Academy of Energy have made a study of the three Draconic Elements: Fire, Electricity, and Light. These three modes of physical energy can be produced by their respective types of Dragon, from which the nature of the elements was originally derived. These Dragons produce energy via an organ in the back of their heads that defies most physical maxims.

Sophists and Wizards alike know that a system cannot produce energy from nothing; the energy must have fuel or be tapping into another source. They concluded that the "organoid" that produces a Dragon's energy acts as a tap, perhaps to another point in space or possibly to another dimension. Wizards learned to replicate this phenomenon not by understanding exactly what it does, but by mastering how it is made to do it.

Wizards with this Power learn that they can focus upon a faceted crystal to create a "singularity." This tiny creation makes a small disturbance in the air as the only evidence of its existence. If directed at solid objects, however, it will burn a perfect hole through them, though it soon dissipates once the Wizard loses sight of it.

A more powerful Wizard of the Academy of Energy is able to perceive vast pools of Energy in the elsewhere. They do not know exactly how they detect it, but they know that the power enables them. That distant Energy serves as the source for the tap. The trained Wizard can then direct this loose energy in as many ways as they can manipulate the tap itself.

As Wizards of the Academy of Energy become more powerful, they can manipulate more types of energy in increasingly creative ways. Fire, Electricity, and Light become their playthings, granting them a level of control that rivals the natural ability of the Dragons who first produced them.

Teaching Methods

Wizard Academies are the strictest and most formal learning environments in Otan. Knocking on the door of a private Wizard's tower is a good way to get blasted, but a terrible way to find a teacher. Instead, most major cities are home to formal Collegiate Academies representing all five of the Wizard disciplines.

Learning a Wizard Power involves about one-fifth lecture attendance, one-fifth lab assignments, and three-fifths reading. This reading load is overwhelming for most Otani residents, as literacy is rarely a priority for the working class. Wizards who come from established magical families enjoy an early advantage, being already familiar with both common and magical script.

Powers manifest in students over time as they study and practice the artifice of a specific discipline until the magical capability is actually present within them. Students who awaken their Power ahead of their peers are still required to continue their studies until the course concludes on its regular schedule. Only then will they be granted their certification and permission to graduate to their next course of study, provided they have accumulated enough raw power.

Students must pay for their courses in the local currency before attending classes. Promising students from impoverished backgrounds are sometimes sponsored by local political leaders in an effort to assure the public that the state's magical defenses remain a priority. Alternatively, some collegiates may accept lower-income Wizards in exchange for labor, which can take various domestic or academic forms.
