Substrain of Aydahar

The Jasil Aydahar (🔊 JAH-zill AY-duh-HAR) are native to the Jasil Aydahar Region of Altinqor. They inherit their genetic makeup from their Water Dragon ancestors or possibly even an adult (or older) Water Dragon parent.
Scientific NameHomo Draconus Aquaticus
PluralJasil Aydahar
PossessiveJasil Aydahari

The Jasil Aydahar (Homo Draconus Aquaticus) are the water-adapted substrain of the dragonfolk, instantly recognizable by their striking greenish or aquamarine scales. Their physiology is heavily modified for a life in Otan’s oceans and lakes, often featuring a prominent dorsal fin, webbed extremities, and functional gills.

While they share the standard resilience of the Aydahar strain, the Jazil possess a unique biological affinity for the water, allowing them to remain submerged indefinitely. This aquatic mastery makes them the primary navigators and defenders of Altinquor’s vast coastlines and deep-water territories.

Because their biology is optimized for high-pressure and low-oxygen environments, the Jazil Aydahar are capable of conducting all aspects of life normally underwater, from mundane activities like eating to the rigorous training required of their archetypes. This specialized respiratory and circulatory system grants them a notable secondary benefit: a natural resistance to breathable poisons and atmospheric toxins.

Culturally, they are known to consume a variety of aquatic flora and fauna that would be inaccessible to other humans, often utilizing their unique physical traits to harvest resources from the lightless depths of Otan's fissures and trenches. This specialized diet prompts many peaceful envoys to brave the journey to Jazil Aydahar lands if only to sample the food.

Physical Characteristics

The Jasil are unmistakably aquatic Aydahar, with greenish or aquamarine scales that reflect their close relationship with the waters of Otan. Their bodies may bear prominent dorsal fins, webbed hands and feet, and functional gills. Like other Aydahar, they possess the characteristic scales, horns, and tails of the strain, although their aquatic adaptations give them a distinctly different appearance from their land-dwelling kin.

Their respiratory and circulatory systems are adapted for prolonged life underwater. Jasil can remain submerged indefinitely and are capable of performing ordinary activities underwater without needing to surface. Their physiology also provides a natural resistance to breathable poisons and atmospheric toxins, an advantage in environments where the water itself may be hazardous.

The Jasil are equally at home in the open ocean, deep lakes, and the submerged fissures and trenches of Otan. Their adaptations allow them to withstand the pressures and limited oxygen of the deepest environments they inhabit. Few other Aydahar can claim such complete mastery of a world that happens to be underwater.

Jasil Aydahar Culture

Jasil society is built around the water. They serve as navigators and defenders of Altinquor's extensive coastlines and deep-water territories, making their knowledge of submerged terrain as important to the Aydahar as the martial traditions of other substrains. For the Jazil, the ocean and lakes are not barriers to civilization. They are where civilization happens.

Their ability to live entirely underwater shapes even the most ordinary parts of daily life. Jasil can eat, work, train, travel, and practice their archetypes without ever leaving the water. Their society therefore makes use of aquatic resources that other peoples rarely encounter, particularly the plants and animals found in the deeper and darker parts of Otan.

Food has become one of the more celebrated products of Jazil culture. Their diet includes aquatic flora and fauna harvested from depths inaccessible to most surface dwellers, and peaceful visitors sometimes undertake the considerable journey to Jazil territory for the privilege of eating it. Diplomacy, apparently, has its limits. Good cooking has fewer.

Jasil Aydahar Geography

The Jasil inhabit the waters surrounding and within Altinquor, with settlements extending along its coastlines and into its deeper aquatic territories. Their natural environment includes oceans and lakes, as well as the submerged fissures and trenches that descend into the darker depths of Otan.

Unlike most peoples, the Jasil do not need to build their settlements around access to water. Water is the settlement. Their specialized physiology allows them to establish communities in places where other humanoids could survive only with substantial equipment or constant access to the surface.

The deepest waters also provide the Jasil with resources unavailable to their land-dwelling kin. Aquatic plants and animals can be harvested from the lightless depths, while the ability to operate indefinitely underwater allows Jazil navigators and defenders to patrol territories that would otherwise be difficult to monitor. Their geography is therefore both homeland and natural defense, with the water itself providing much of the separation between Jazil communities and the surface world.
