Dehydration
Dehydration Damage occurs when the body loses more water than it can replace. This can happen naturally over time when a creature is unable to restore water lost through sweating, urination, bleeding, or other bodily processes. High temperatures and dry winds can accelerate the loss, making dehydration particularly dangerous in hot or arid environments.
As dehydration progresses, the body becomes increasingly unable to function normally. The victim may become weak, dizzy, confused, and eventually unable to remain conscious. Unlike an ordinary wound, Dehydration Damage may continue to accumulate as long as the underlying lack of water remains unresolved.
Dehydration Sources
Dehydration Damage can arise from ordinary environmental conditions or from supernatural effects that accelerate the loss of water from the body. A creature without access to drinking water may suffer dehydration naturally, while curses, magical spells, and archetypal powers can produce the same effect much more rapidly.
Examples include:
- Lack of drinking water
- Prolonged exposure to high temperatures
- Dry winds and arid environments
- Curses
- Magical spells
- Archetypal powers
- Supernatural effects that remove water from the body
Dehydration Saving Throws
Endurance is almost always the best defense against Dehydration Damage. A creature with strong physical resilience can tolerate the effects of water loss for longer and remain functional despite increasing dehydration.
Agility may help a creature escape particularly harsh environmental conditions, while Strength can assist in physically overcoming obstacles that prevent access to water. Will may provide a last-ditch defense when the body is failing, and the victim must continue functioning despite severe dehydration.
Dehydration Mitigation
Dehydration Damage is most effectively mitigated by restoring the water the body has lost and removing the victim from conditions that accelerate further loss. Access to clean drinking water is usually the simplest remedy, while magical effects may restore hydration or counter a supernatural source of the damage.
Other forms of mitigation include:
- Counter-magic
- Protective wards
- Spiritual shielding against supernatural effects
- Drinking water or other suitable fluids
- Magical hydration
- Potions that restore hydration
- Moving to a cooler or more humid environment
- Resting and avoiding further exertion
- Ending the curse, spell, or other effect causing the dehydration
Dehydration Related Conditions
Dizziness is an early condition associated with Dehydration Damage. As dehydration worsens, dizziness may progress to Fainting, leaving the victim temporarily unable to act or respond.
Severe dehydration can result in Unconsciousness, preceded by increasing weakness, dizziness, and episodes of fainting. If the underlying dehydration is not corrected, the victim will eventually die from the effects of prolonged water loss.
