Exhaustion

Exhaustion Damage occurs when the body is pushed beyond what it can reasonably sustain without rest. It can develop naturally through prolonged physical exertion, lack of sleep, or continued activity without adequate recovery. It can also be imposed magically, weakening the body so that even ordinary activity becomes exhausting and further exertion risks rapid over-exhaustion.
Exhaustion can be exacerbated by extreme conditions or other forms of physical damage. Heavy encumbrance, lack of air or oxygen, significant blood loss, extreme temperatures, dehydration, and magical interference can all accelerate the onset of exhaustion. As exhaustion accumulates, the body becomes progressively less capable of supporting continued activity until even standing or remaining conscious may become difficult.
Exhaustion Sources
Exhaustion Damage most commonly results from natural overuse of the body, particularly when a creature continues exerting itself without sufficient rest or sleep. Extreme environments can turn otherwise manageable activity into a source of exhaustion, while magical effects can weaken the body directly or prevent it from recovering normally.
Examples include:
- Natural overuse of the body
- Extreme lack of rest or sleep
- Prolonged physical exertion
- Extreme environmental conditions
- Over-encumbrance
- Lack of air or oxygen
- Significant blood loss
- Extreme temperatures
- Curses
- Magical spells
- Archetypal powers
Exhaustion Saving Throws
Endurance is almost always the best defense against Exhaustion Damage. A creature with strong physical resilience can continue functioning despite prolonged exertion, environmental stress, and accumulated fatigue. When exhaustion becomes severe, an Endurance save may determine whether the creature remains standing or collapses Prone or Unconscious.
Strength may help when exhaustion results from sustained physical effort, while Agility can help a creature conserve energy through efficient movement or avoid unnecessary exertion. Will may provide a last-ditch defense when the body is exhausted but the creature must continue functioning.
Exhaustion Mitigation
The most effective mitigation for Exhaustion Damage is rest. Allowing the body to recover, reducing physical exertion, and removing the conditions responsible for the exhaustion can prevent further damage and allow recovery. Magical effects can also restore endurance or temporarily allow a creature to function beyond its normal physical limits.
Other forms of mitigation include:
- Rest and sleep
- Potions of endurance
- Magic buffs
- Archetypal endurance powers
- Magical restoration
- Reducing encumbrance
- Moving to a less demanding environment
- Restoring lost blood or oxygen
- Treating other conditions contributing to exhaustion
Exhaustion Related Conditions
Prone is an early severe consequence of Exhaustion Damage. A creature that can no longer support its own weight may collapse to the ground, becoming unable or unwilling to continue exerting itself. Dizziness and Fainting may precede this collapse as the body's ability to sustain activity deteriorates.
More severe Exhaustion Damage can result in Unconsciousness, leaving the victim completely unable to act while the body attempts to recover. If exhaustion continues unchecked, the body's systems may eventually fail, resulting in death.
