Necrotic
Necrotic Damage is the death of living flesh within the body. Depending on its source, necrosis may occur almost instantly or progress gradually as disease, poison, or supernatural influence destroys living tissue. Each source prescribes its own rate of progression. Some forms can kill quickly, while others slowly consume the body over several days.
Left untreated, necrosis continues to destroy the affected tissue and eventually threatens the life of the victim. Necrotic flesh must be restored, removed, or otherwise prevented from spreading. In severe cases, this may require the removal of an entire limb or other affected part of the body. Once necrosis has become sufficiently widespread, the damage can become fatal.
Necrotic Sources
Necrotic Damage can arise from biological disease, toxic substances, undead powers, or supernatural effects that cause living tissue to die. The source determines how rapidly the necrosis develops and what parts of the body it affects. Some sources may produce immediate necrosis, while others establish a progressive condition that worsens until treated.
Examples include:
- Bacterial infections
- Certain poisons
- Undead powers
- Wards
- Curses
- Magical spells
- Archetypal powers
- Other supernatural effects that cause living tissue to die
Necrotic Saving Throws
Endurance is almost always the best defense against Necrotic Damage. A resilient body can resist the progression of infection, poison, or supernatural tissue death and prevent the necrosis from advancing into more severe stages.
A successful Endurance save may prevent progression toward Prone, Loss of Limb, Blindness, or Unconsciousness. Agility may help avoid exposure to a source of necrosis, while Strength may help resist or escape a physical delivery mechanism. Will can provide a final defense when the victim must continue functioning despite severe deterioration.
Necrotic Mitigation
Necrotic Damage must be treated by stopping the source of the necrosis and restoring or removing the affected tissue. Antidotes and potions that cure poison may be effective when poison is responsible, while potions of endurance can help the body resist further progression. Healing potions, magical healing, and archetypal endurance powers may restore living tissue or help the body survive long enough for more definitive treatment.
Other forms of mitigation include:
- Antidotes
- Potions that cure poison
- Potions of endurance
- Healing potions
- Magic healing
- Archetypal endurance powers
- Removing necrotic tissue
- Amputating an affected limb when necessary
- Destroying or ending the source of the necrosis
Necrotic Related Conditions
Dizziness, Vomiting, and Fainting may accompany progressing Necrotic Damage, particularly when the underlying source is an infection or poison. As the necrosis advances, the victim may become Prone, Blind, or Unconscious, depending upon which tissues and organs are affected.
Severe necrosis can result in Loss of Limb when affected tissue cannot be restored and must be removed to prevent further progression. Specific sources may produce additional conditions of their own. If untreated, continued necrosis invariably leads to death as increasing amounts of living tissue are destroyed.
