The Aya Qurilissi (🔊 AYY-ya KOO-rih-LEE-see) are fabled to have created all life on Otan. They have an affinity with the three life elements, Flesh, Wood and Chitin.
Scientific NameHomo Elementalis Lignum
PluralAya Qurilissi
PossessiveAya Qurilissi

The Aya Qurilissi (Homo Elementalis Lignum) are the divine gardeners of Otan, the architects of the living world. While their elemental cousins forged the mountains and seas, the Aya were charged with the far more delicate task of populating the biosphere. In the dawn of time, they numbered in the thousands, spreading across the primordial landscape to engineer every manner of flora and fauna. Through their mastery over the Life elements, Flesh, Wood, and Chitin, they did not merely plant forests or watch over animals; they physically manifested the first breeding pairs of all non-sentient life on Otan, weaving magic and biological knowledge into the very fabric of the wild.

The power of an Aya Qurilissi is one of rapid, organic transmutation. They can shift their own physical form into the resilient grain of ancient heartwood or the impenetrable plates of insectoid chitin. This internal command over the building blocks of life historically allowed them to heal the land after natural disasters, accelerate the growth of vast jungles, and design the intricate ecosystems that sustain the world today. Every leaf, every limb, and every beating heart on Otan is a testament to the meticulous labor of the Aya, who viewed the planet not as a collection of resources, but as a single, breathing organism.

Following the Great Erasure, the Aya Qurilissi vanished more completely than perhaps any other strain. The gods’ purge of memory seemed to hit the "Life-shapers" with particular severity, leaving the forests of Otan to grow wild and untended by their original masters. Today, there are no confirmed living Aya Qurilissi within the known territories of the continent. Their Absence is felt in the fading of certain ancient groves and the slow extinction of species that once required their constant, magical oversight to thrive.

However, a singular, persistent rumor haunts the dark heart of the Kiskentay rainforest. Local legends tell of a "Living Root" or a "Green Man" who was seen centuries ago being carried deep underground by a massive, prehistoric burrowing creature. Some Sophists speculate that this individual may have been an Aya Qurilissi, preserved in a state of chrysalis or stasis beneath the roots of the world’s oldest trees. If this survivor still draws breath in the lightless depths of the jungle, they represent the last hope for restoring the true balance of Otan’s ecology and reclaiming the lost secrets of the Great Design.

Physical Characteristics

Like the rest of their kind, the Aya Qurilissi are physically indistinguishable from baseline humans, sharing the same broad range of skin, hair, and eye colors, and aging, breathing, and bleeding exactly as any other person would. Nothing about their resting appearance hints at the dormant mastery of Flesh, Wood, and Chitin coiled within them.

What sets their discovery apart from their elemental cousins is the method of it. Where a Jer or Suu Qurilissi might be pulled from stone or ice, the rare confirmed Aya has been found fused into living wood, woven so completely into the grain of a trunk that they pass for a knot or a burl until someone cuts close enough to find flesh instead of heartwood. The moment that wood is cleared away, they revive as a young, healthy human, with no memory of the years, or centuries, spent inside the tree.

Once awakened, their command over the Life elements can manifest at any scale, from a minor toughening of the skin to a complete transformation into hardened timber or plated chitin. Because so few Aya have ever been recorded, no one knows whether this power grows with time the way it seems to in their cousins, or whether an Aya simply reawakens already carrying the full weight of what they once were.

Aya Qurilissi Culture

wiki#.png

An Aya Qurilissi has no culture of its own to return to, so it takes on the culture of whoever frees it. A woodcutter, a hunting party, or a forester's family becomes, in effect, the entire world a revived Aya has ever known, and they settle into that community's customs, language, and daily life with the same completeness that marked every other Qurilissi's quiet assimilation.

This makes each known Aya's origin story inseparable from an act of accidental rescue: someone felled a tree, or peeled back its bark, and found a person instead of wood. That single moment defines everything that follows, since the Aya carries no personal history of their own to draw on, only whatever identity their rescuers help them build afterward.

Memory may be gone, but something else occasionally survives the wood. A few recorded Aya have shown an unexplained fluency in a trade or fighting style the moment they're revived, hinting that archetypal training, if not the memories behind it, can outlast even total memory loss. Whether this is a fragment of who they were before the Great Erasure or something else entirely remains a mystery even to the Sophists who study them.

Aya Qurilissi Geography

wiki#.png

The Aya claim no homeland, and in theory could be found anywhere on Otan, since their only real requirement is the cover of a forest. Any stretch of old, undisturbed woodland is a plausible resting place for one of the Life-shapers, whether or not anyone alive suspects it.

The one persistent exception is the rumor tied to the Kiskentay rainforest, but even that is treated as a single data point rather than a confirmed territory. Given how few Aya have ever been found, and how completely they vanish into whichever wood conceals them, there is no reason to believe Kiskentay holds the only one.
