Dazed

From Will to Power Wiki

A Dazed character or creature has impaired awareness, coordination, or mental focus, making it more difficult to act effectively. The condition may affect almost any activity, from moving across the battlefield to striking an opponent, defending against an attack, or casting a spell. Even actions that would ordinarily be routine may become unreliable.

Dazed does not necessarily mean that a victim is helpless or unable to act. Rather, the victim has an increased chance of failure, with the degree of impairment depending on the cause and severity of the condition. A Dazed character may understand what needs to be done but struggle to make their body or mind cooperate.

Dazed Causes

Dazed may result from physical distress, mental disruption, intoxicating substances, or supernatural interference. Some causes temporarily impair coordination or consciousness, while others disrupt concentration, perception, or the ability to make sound decisions.

Examples include:

  • Asphyxiation and oxygen deprivation
  • Exhaustion, severe fatigue, or physical shock
  • Alcohol and other intoxicating drugs
  • Poisons and other substances that impair the nervous system
  • Head injuries and other physical trauma
  • Magical spells and archetypal powers
  • Charms, curses, and other supernatural effects
  • Confusion, fear, or other conditions that interfere with effective action

Dazed Effects

In combat, a Dazed character or creature has an increased chance of failing any action that requires effective movement, coordination, concentration, or judgment. Depending on the intended action and the source of the condition, the GM may require an Endurance, Intelligence, or Will check to determine whether the action succeeds.

Endurance may be appropriate when physical coordination or stamina is compromised; Intelligence when the action depends on clear thought or concentration; and Will when the victim must overcome mental or spiritual interference. A failed check means the intended action does not succeed. If a movement attempt fails in a way that causes the victim to lose their balance, the GM may also impose the Prone condition.

The condition does not automatically prevent all actions. Its effect is to make successful action less reliable, with the appropriate check determined by what the character is attempting and why they are Dazed.

Removing the Dazed Condition

The method of removing Dazed depends on its cause. Temporary impairment may pass with time and rest, while poisoning, injury, curses, or magical effects may require specific treatment.

Possible methods include:

  • Rest and recovery
  • Removing the source of physical distress or mental disruption
  • Administering curative potions
  • Treating intoxication or poisoning with appropriate remedies
  • Applying curative magic
  • Using archetypal powers that restore physical or mental function
  • Employing magical artefacts that restore clarity or coordination
  • Removing a curse or countering the spell responsible

Treating the underlying cause is important. If the victim remains exposed to the effect that caused Dazed, the condition may persist or return.

Long Term Dazed Effects

A brief episode of Dazed may cause little more than a missed action or an awkward stumble. If the condition persists or worsens, however, repeated failures may leave the victim vulnerable to further attacks and environmental hazards. Failed movement may result in Prone, making the victim even less capable of responding effectively.

Severe or prolonged impairment may progress to Unconsciousness. If the underlying cause continues to inflict damage or otherwise threatens the victim's survival, the condition may ultimately contribute to Dead. Dazed itself does not necessarily cause death; the outcome depends on the severity, duration, and source of the impairment.
