Frost Burn

Frost Burn Damage is physical damage caused by extreme cold that freezes and damages living tissue. Rather than burning through heat, frost burns through prolonged exposure to temperatures low enough to freeze skin, blood, and deeper tissues. Severe exposure can damage nerves, muscles, and blood vessels, leaving tissue permanently injured even after the victim has been removed from the cold.
Frost Burn can result from natural environments, magical cold, supernatural creatures, or weapons that project freezing energy. Unlike ordinary cold weather, a concentrated frost attack can freeze exposed tissue almost instantly. Prolonged exposure can be equally dangerous, particularly when the victim is unable to escape the source or protect themselves from the cold.
Frost Burn Sources
Frost Burn Damage can originate from extreme natural conditions, magical effects, specialized weapons, or creatures capable of generating or projecting supernatural cold. Some creatures use intense cold as an offensive weapon, while others possess an aura of freezing cold that makes approaching them dangerous.
Examples include:
- Extreme cold and prolonged exposure to freezing environments
- Magical frost and ice attacks
- Tinker weapons that project freezing substances or energy
- Creatures with frost or cold attacks
- Creatures surrounded by a freezing aura
- Magical traps that release intense cold
- Frozen environments or supernatural regions where temperatures are dangerously low
Frost Burn Saving Throws
Outside of combat, Agility may allow a character to avoid a sudden frost attack, move away from an area of extreme cold, or escape a trap before it can fully affect them. Endurance is the primary defense when the character must remain exposed to the cold, representing the body's ability to withstand extreme environmental stress and maintain its vital functions.
In some circumstances, Will may provide a secondary defense when the character must continue functioning despite the debilitating effects of extreme cold. A strong Will may allow someone to keep moving when their body is becoming stiff and unresponsive. In combat, however, Saving Throws do not ordinarily replace the combat rules. Combat actions, attacks, defenses, and the circumstances of the encounter determine whether a frost attack connects and how its effects are resolved.
Frost Burn Mitigation
Frost Burn Damage can be mitigated by insulating the body, removing the victim from the source of the cold, or providing sufficient heat to prevent or reverse freezing. Protection must be maintained for as long as the exposure continues; surviving the initial attack does not necessarily mean the danger has passed.
Active forms of mitigation include:
- Protection from frost potions
- Insulated armor or protective clothing
- Heavy clothing, blankets, and other insulating materials
- Heat sources used to warm the body or environment
- Magical effects that provide warmth or resist cold
- Protection runes and magical artefacts designed to resist frost
- Removing the character from an area of extreme cold
- Moving behind physical barriers that block exposure
- Carefully warming frozen tissue after exposure has ended
Frost Burn Related Conditions
Frost Burn damage can produce Numbness as cold begins to interfere with nerves and circulation. As exposure continues, affected tissue may become stiff, lose sensation, and eventually suffer permanent damage. Severe frost damage can result in Loss of Limb Function or Loss of Limb when tissue has been frozen beyond recovery.
Extreme cold can also cause Unconsciousness as the body's ability to maintain its normal functions deteriorates. If exposure continues after the victim becomes unconscious, Frost Burn damage can ultimately result in death.
