Among the scholarly circles of Otan, most Sophists agree that Witches were the first of the Powered Archetypes, serving as the foundational root from which nearly all other magical disciplines eventually branched. Long before the specialized classes of the modern era codified their distinct arts, the primitive Witch was already mapping the invisible currents of the cosmos. They commanded loyal animal companions centuries before the first Hunter ever laid a snare, and they cast raw, unformatted spells long before the academic structures of the Aether Wizards were even conceived.
Furthermore, Witches brokered profound pacts with the shifting Heavens and the chaotic Nether World eons before the structured advent of dedicated Divines or the geometric control circles of the Warlocks. They were the original conduits of the supernatural, acting as the vanguard of mortal interaction with the unknown. Over the generations, as their vast knowledge was dissected and specialized, many of their practices spun off into these independent, hyper-focused Archetypes, yet the foundational source remained as potent as ever.
Despite birthed lineages that became entirely new classes, the Witch has never been rendered obsolete; rather, their deeply ingrained penchant for relentless research has left them as the Archetype boasting the most broadly varied and versatile Powers in all of Otan. While other magic-users are rigidly confined by the parameters of their specific training, a Witch remains a generalist of the sublime, refusing to limit the scope of their intellect to a single methodology.
To step into the world of a master Witch is to witness a breathtaking, eclectic synthesis of various esoteric sciences. They delve deeply into the geometric permanence of runic magic, the focused energy distribution of powered crystals, and the complex chemistry of herbal potions and remedies. Simultaneously, they maintain mastery over physical animism through animated poppets and tap directly into the sprawling, invisible aethereal powers of the Universe at large. This unmatched breadth makes them uniquely unpredictable and undeniably formidable.
The Witch in Society
The social position of a Witch within the settlements of Otan is defined by a deeply tragic paradox. They are the ultimate long-term residents of their communities, anchoring themselves to a village or district for generations as vital healers, wise teachers, and quiet protectors. They hold the institutional memory of the land, watching families grow from infancy to old age. Yet, despite this lifetime of selfless service, human nature dictates that they are almost always the very first to earn the community's sudden distrust and superstitious hostility whenever an unexplained tragedy or sudden blight strikes.
When the local crops fail unexpectedly, or a mysterious plague sweeps through a neighborhood, the ignorant and the frightened quickly forget the decades of medicine and wisdom the Witch provided. Superficial gratitude curdles into fear, turning the local protector into an immediate scapegoat. Yet, because a Witch's bond to their home is tied to deeper cosmic rhythms, they endure this societal volatility with a weary, patient resilience, continuing their vital work even in the face of murmurs and sideways glances.
In day-to-day activities, a Witch acts as a community's most reliable, holistic problem solver. They operate as the invisible grease that keeps the wheels of rural or urban frontier life turning smoothly. A neighbor will seek out a Witch to make harmonious romantic matches, heal a stubborn sickness, or deliver a newborn child safely into the world. When life reaches its inevitable conclusion, it is also the Witch who steps forward to perform the sacred, delicate death-rites, gently guiding the recently departed soul away from the material plane and safely into the next world.
Their utility extends far beyond domestic aid; however, witches are heavily involved in the structured operations of civil defense. For a fair and negotiated fee, a Witch will systematically fortify a settlement, anchoring protective magical wards along the perimeter and brewing highly potent herbal potions designed to temporarily strengthen the stamina and rapidly heal the wounds of the local militia. While they prefer to let others handle the physical fighting, a few among them will take to the battlefield themselves, though they view active combat as a profound failure of planning, stepping forward to unleash their personal wrath only when the other available heroic Archetypes have failed to hold the line.
Witch Schools
The transmission of Witchcraft avoids the sterile rigidity of modern universities, relying instead on an intensely personal blend of written grimoires and guarded oral traditions. While recipe proportions and runic geometry are meticulously inked into leather-bound shadows, the specific spiritual "resonance" required to wake a crystal or bind a poppet must be spoken aloud from mentor to student. This comprehensive curriculum is divided among five distinct Witch Covens, each preserving a unique avenue of their ancient, ancestral science.
Coven Universal The Coven Universal represents the purists of the original archetype, focusing their studies on the broad, unformatted manipulation of cosmic energy. Scholars of this coven reject material crutches, learning to harmonize directly with the aethereal powers of the Universe at large. They specialize in manipulating probability, reading the alignment of the stars, and weaving raw, versatile spells that can adapt to almost any sudden environmental or combat variable.
Crystal Coven: Dedicated to the laws of focus, refraction, and amplification, the Crystal Coven treats geology as a high-tier magical circuit. Members of this coven master the art of harvesting, cutting, and tuning rare, powered crystals. By channeling raw energy through these mineral matrices, they can create localized beams of destructive force, project unyielding defensive barriers, or store massive reserves of raw magical power inside a single gemstone for later deployment.
Herbal Coven: The Herbal Coven bridges the gap between organic nature and volatile chemistry. These practitioners are the master apothecaries of the archetype, maintaining an exhaustive, encyclopedic knowledge of Otan’s varied flora. They spend their lifetimes mapping the medicinal, toxic, and supernatural properties of roots, fungi, and leaves, mastering the delicate boiling points and planetary alignments required to brew life-saving remedies or catastrophic airborne toxins.
Poppet Crafters: The most distinct and uncanny school is that of the Poppet Crafters. This coven specializes in physical animism and sympathetic magic, focusing entirely on the creation and animation of specialized dolls. By stitching fabrics, carving wood, and stuffing these effigies with symbolic herbs or personal tokens, a Poppet Crafter can create autonomous mechanical helpers or forge an invisible, sympathetic link to a target, allowing them to inflict pain or bestow healing from afar.
Runic Coven: Anchored by the permanence of geometry and linguistics, the Runic Coven deals in the art of absolute inscription. Witches of this discipline study ancient, foundational symbols that command the laws of physics and reality. By etching these precise runes into stone, wood, or flesh, they can permanently alter an object's properties, create self-sustaining traps, or anchor massive, unyielding defensive wards that actively repel malicious intent.
Witch Powers
Because of their multi-disciplinary education, the powers of a Witch are remarkably fluid, focusing heavily on spatial control, utility, and targeted biological manipulation. At a moment's notice, a Witch can alter the flow of a skirmish by introducing complex, pre-prepared assets to the field. They do not rely on rapid-fire incantations; instead, they alter reality through the perfect execution of their diverse crafting traditions, making them incredibly versatile tacticians who always possess a tool for the situation at hand.
Through their powers, a Witch can weave complex perimeter wards that actively confuse or weaken encroaching enemies, deploy animated poppets to serve as disposable bodyguards or distracting saboteurs, and shatter enemy lines with focused elemental energy drawn straight from powered crystals. When the tide of battle turns bloody, their magic shifts instantly to profound, fast-acting physical restoration, utilizing accelerated herbal chemistry to mend flesh and purge deadly toxins, ensuring their allies remain vertical in the harshest conditions.
Crafting
For the Witch, crafting is not a secondary trade; it is the direct, physical vessel through which their magical power is safely stored and directed. They are the most prolific and diverse crafters in all of Otan, with each of their distinct traditions requiring an immense investment of manual labor, precise measurements, and material gathering. They do not simply cast a spell and walk away; they forge tangible objects of power that endure long after the initial casting energy has subsided.
The most prolific of these crafters are found within the Herbal Coven, whose endless production of high-potency potions, oils, and panaceas drives the medical economy of many frontier regions. Simultaneously, the Poppet Crafters invest their hours into creating intricate dolls, carving tiny wooden joints, and weaving hair to craft sympathetic links or tiny, autonomous scouts. Meanwhile, the Runic Coven spends their days etching complex, heavy stones, fabricating permanent, high-tier magical wards explicitly designed to repel, weaken, and completely keep away the unwanted.
The Witch and Power
The intense mental focus, emotional expenditure, and volatile chemical fumes that define a Witch’s daily routine require a highly specific, comforting environment to achieve total rejuvenation. To completely recharge their deep spiritual and magical reserves, a Witch must retreat entirely from public life to their personal Witches' Kitchen.
Far from a common cooking area, this sanctuary is a self-styled magical studio and crafter’s dream, meticulously organized and packed with heavy brass cauldrons, specialized distillation tubes, rows of glowing crystal hanging-racks, and walls of dried, exotic ingredients. Within this warm, familiar cradle of creation, a few days of quiet brewing, cleaning, and organizing will completely restore their internal energy.
When traveling far from the comfort of their primary hearths, a Witch cannot access the profound restoration of their Kitchen, but their deeply resourceful nature ensures they are never left completely helpless. While on the road, they can easily ward off magical exhaustion and maintain their focus by engaging in small-scale, portable witchy projects and experiments. By spending their evenings around a campfire, blending basic trail remedies, carving fresh runes into scrap wood, or making minor adjustments to a travel poppet, a Witch effectively realigns their energy, keeping their vital survival powers functional until they can return to a true sanctuary.
Witch Factions
While highly independent by nature, Warlocks and Wizards are not the only ones to organize; Witches frequently unite under three distinct functional faction models to advance their research or protect their homes:
Training Covens: These are the traditional, highly insular organizations devoted purely to the preservation and expansion of their primary school of training, ensuring that specific herbal formulas or runic geometry are perfectly passed down to the next generation.
Political & Research Associations: Formed across different specializations, these advanced covens bring together Witches with a singular, shared political or research goal. They function as esoteric think tanks, lobbying local rulers, organizing material trade routes, and combining their distinct disciplines to solve continent-scale crises.
Civil Defense Units: Operating as formal, contracted security for vulnerable border towns or city sectors, these tactical units focus entirely on communal preservation. They provide permanent defensive wards, create hidden emergency hiding-places, and supply mass-produced healing potions to guarantee the safety of local residents.
