Substrain of Aydahar

The Kara Aydahar (🔊 CAR-ruh AY-duh-HAR) are native to the Kara Aydahar Region of the Altinqor Confederation. They share their genetic makeup with their Rock Dragon progenitors.
Scientific NameHomo Draconus Lapis
PluralKara Aydahar
PossessiveKara Aydahari

The Kara Aydahar (Homo Draconus Lithos), also known as the Black or Rock Aydahar, are the resilient inhabitants of Otan’s mountainous and subterranean regions, defined by their ancient connection to Rock Dragons. While the term "Kara" is the old-Otani word for black, their scales can manifest in the color and texture of any naturally occurring stone, often accented by high-contrast, swept-back horns. This substrain is particularly renowned for their stoic nature and physical durability, frequently serving as the steadfast backbone of Altinquor’s defensive fortifications and mining operations.

The defining biological feature of the Kara is a specialized internal organ that allows them to process and excrete liquefied stone through their pores, which then hardens into a dense, mineralized outer layer of scales. This "lithic skin" is chemically and physically reinforced by the specific types of stone they interact with most, granting them extraordinary natural resistance to acid as well as slashing and piercing weaponry.

Due to their unique physiology, the Kara Aydahar diet often includes mineral-rich substances, and they are known to favor hearty, "crunchy" fare such as roasted Fissure Spiders, which provide the necessary nutrients to maintain their stony hides. Few other substrains have been known to truly enjoy the unique fare at a Kara Aydahar tavern, save possibly the Karangi.

Physical Characteristics

The Kara take their physical character from their Rock Dragon progenitors. Although their name means “black” in Old Otani, their scales are not limited to black. Their bodies may take on the color and texture of whatever naturally occurring stone their Dragon Seed favors, producing Kara ranging from pale alabaster through lapis and onyx. Onyx Kara are particularly prized as castle guards.

The Kara possess the characteristic scales, horns, and tails of the Aydahar, but their most remarkable feature is their lithic skin. A specialized organ allows them to process stone and excrete it through their pores, where it hardens into a dense mineralized outer layer. The particular stone they consume and interact with reinforces this layer, giving the Kara exceptional resistance to acid as well as slashing and piercing attacks.

Their diet reflects this unusual physiology. Mineral-rich foods are important to maintaining their stone-like hides, and Kara are perfectly content with meals that other peoples might regard as better suited to a quarry than a kitchen. Roasted Fissure Spider is considered good eating among them, although the same cannot necessarily be said for their guests.

Kara Aydahar Culture

The Kara are among the more stoic of the Aydahar and are closely associated with the defense of Altinquor. They serve as foot soldiers and protectors of the territories claimed by the Rock Dragons, while also forming an important part of the Confederation's defensive fortifications. Their physical resilience makes them particularly well suited to holding ground that others might prefer not to stand upon.

Mining and metalworking are important Kara occupations. Their relationship with the mountains gives them access to stone, minerals, and the subterranean spaces needed for their industries, while their blacksmiths are known for working with exceptionally hot forges. In volcanic regions, Kara smiths can make use of lava vents and veins beneath the mountains; their resistance to molten rock allows them to draw on these sources while helping regulate the pressure and gases within the volcanoes. The arrangement benefits the Kara, the Rock Dragons, and everyone living nearby who would rather not be buried in lava.

Kara society is not without its spiritual side. Their Divines are devoted followers of Jormungandr and act as protectors of the Rock Dragon lands, while their Shamans serve as a link between the Kara people and the natural world. Even their Witches turn the landscape itself into a weapon, carving protective runes into natural stone and concentrating their magic along narrow approaches.

Kara Aydahar Geography

The Kara inhabit the Kara Aydahar Region of the Altinquor Confederation, favoring underground environments above all others. They are equally at home in mountainous terrain, particularly where natural caves provide access to the depths. Their settlements and activities therefore tend to follow the rock itself rather than the surface geography.

Rock Dragons also favor this terrain, creating a close relationship between Kara settlements and the places where their draconic kin have made their homes. Volcanically active mountains are especially valuable. Caves lower on the mountains provide access to lava vents and mineral veins, allowing Kara smiths to establish forges close to the magma itself.

Natural caves also provide defensive advantages. Kara Witches use them and the surrounding rock to carve protective runes and establish powerful hexes focused on narrow approaches. Combined with the Kara's natural durability and their role as defenders of Rock Dragon territory, these underground communities can be formidable places to invade.
