The Akimsilik (Homo Cynoides Vulpes) function as the intellectual and logistical backbone of Gari society, driven by a biological imperative toward structure and categorization. This substrain possesses an innate, almost obsessive-compulsive instinct for order; they find profound unease in the unaccounted-for or the displaced, making them the premier record-keepers and bureaucrats of the southern coast.
In Garis culture, this manifests as a natural talent for "bookish" professions, where they tirelessly enumerate the resources and movements of the pack. Those among them gifted with the knack for magic frequently rise to become powerful spellcasters, utilizing their disciplined minds to master the complexities of arcane theory, while those without magical aptitude serve as the vital administrators that keep Gari civilization functioning with clockwork precision.
While their temperament typically steers them toward the halls of governance, individual Akimsilik occasionally venture into the more physically demanding roles held by their kin. Even when serving in military or law enforcement capacities, both within and outside the Akimsilik Region, they are rarely found on the chaotic front lines. Instead, their analytical nature draws them toward detective work, military intelligence, or strategic planning. In these roles, they apply their sharp canine senses and deductive minds to solve puzzles that would baffle others, ensuring that every threat is identified and every asset is perfectly positioned.
Whether managing the archives of a coastal city or coordinating a complex intelligence operation, the Akimsilik remain ever-watchful, ensuring that the Garis people remain organized and prepared for their eventual dominance.
Physical Characteristics
The Akimsilik are the most slender of the Garis, though no less tall, typically 11 to 12 Kol in height. They are most distinguished by their vulpine features. Their ears form points above their foreheads, and their mouths run the length of their narrow and extended snouts. The shape of their snout gives them a higher-pitched, more nasal sound when speaking than other Garis.
The Akimsilik are completely covered in short fur, with longer fur on their tails and sometimes much longer hair extending from behind their ears and covering the back of their heads. The fur color can be gray, black, white, or the familiar red, white, and black pattern exhibited by foxes.
They walk on the pads of their feet and, while standing, never rest on what typical humans would call their heels. That posture gives them the extra height they have over other humans. They compensate for the lack of heels by balancing with their long tails, which measure up to 4 Kol.
Akimsilik Culture
The Akimsilik occupy a peculiar position within Garis society. They are the thinkers, organizers, administrators, and managers who keep a nation built for war functioning between battles. Their instinct for order makes them natural record-keepers and bureaucrats, while their analytical minds lead many into law enforcement, intelligence, investigation, and strategic planning. In the Garis Triumvirate itself, the Akimsilik Triumvir serves as the political center, balancing the interests of the more aggressive Ustemdik and the more economically rigid Beybitsilik.
Their talents extend well beyond government offices. Akimsilik are frequently found overseeing the skilled trades that support the Garis war machine, particularly blacksmithing and the manufacture of weapons, armor, and battle machines. When Garis forces occupy a settlement, Akimsilik commonly serve as foremen and managers, directing the skilled laborers required to keep production moving. Their methods can be coercive, but they favor calculated persuasion, incentives, and psychological pressure over the blunt brutality more typical of their Ustemdik kin.
Magic is another area in which the Akimsilik have made an extraordinary mark. The source material describes the vulpine Garis as producing some of the most powerful Wizards in Otan and raising the standard for magical study. Their mastery is not limited to conventional spellcraft; Akimsilik have also demonstrated considerable talent in the psychic arts, with practitioners capable of extraordinary feats of concentration and mental power.
For all their reputation as bookish creatures, Akimsilik are not simply clerks hiding behind stacks of parchment. They can hunt, fight, and command when necessary, and their sharp senses make them effective trackers and investigators. An Akimsilik would rather know exactly what happened, who did it, why they did it, and where they went than simply hit someone with a sword. This is probably why Garis civilization gives them so many things to keep track of.
Akimsilik Geography
The Akimsilik live primarily in the **Akimsilik Region of the Garis Triumvirate**, located along the southern coast of Otan. The region's capital is **Trappist**, which also serves as the capital of the entire Garis Triumvirate. The source material does not currently provide much additional description of the region's natural geography, so its character is better understood through the people who inhabit it than through a detailed account of its landscape.
Trappist is therefore both an Akimsilik center and the administrative heart of Garis civilization. From here, Akimsilik influence extends far beyond their own region through government, military planning, industry, magical scholarship, and the management of the enormous machinery of the Garis state. The broader Garis nation is heavily invested in civic engineering and infrastructure, including public libraries, museums, transportation systems, printing presses, railways, and even massive atmospheric airships.
The Akimsilik presence is not confined to their homeland. Their skills make them valuable wherever Garis interests require organization, whether that means administering a city, supervising a factory, coordinating military operations, or managing intelligence beyond the borders of the Akimsilik Region. In this sense, their geography is unusually mobile: the region may be their home, but the ledger, the command table, and the archive can travel with them.
