The Aq Aydahar (Homo Draconus Cryos) are a specialized northern branch of the metal dragonfolk, inhabiting the most inhospitable peaks of the Aydahar mountain range in northern Altinquor. Within these frozen heights, they serve a singular role as the dedicated stewards and protectors of the Ice Dragons who have claimed the region for their vast hoards.
The Aqs' proximity to the great wyrms has fostered a deep symbiosis; while the Altin Aydahar as a whole are known for their organizational prowess and knightly traditions, the Aq have adapted specifically to the demands of a high-altitude, sub-zero existence. Their society is defined by this duty, navigating the vertical terrain with a resilience that surpasses even their metal-scaled kin.
Physically, the Aq are distinguished by their striking snow-white coloration and a physiological resistance to extreme cold so profound that they are often seen traversing glaciers with minimal garments. Evolutionary pressures from their lofty mountain homes have made the development of functional wings far more common among the Aq than other Aydahar substrains.
Their most exceptional mutation, however, is the rare "frost breath" mutation; a biological anomaly unique to the Aq and made possible only by their innate resistance to freezing. This ability allows them to stand as peerless guardians of the northern passes, wielding the very elements of their frozen environment to defend the hoards they tend.
Physical Characteristics
The Aq Aydahar possess the same fundamental mammalian physiology as other Aydahar, but their Ice Dragon ancestry is immediately apparent. Their scales and other draconic features are predominantly snow-white, giving them an almost stark appearance against the dark stone and ice of their mountain homes. Like other Aydahar, they develop scales as they mature and may possess horns, tails, and wings.
The defining physical adaptation of the Aq is their extraordinary resistance to cold. Temperatures that would quickly become dangerous to other peoples are little more than an inconvenience to them, allowing Aq to travel across glaciers and exposed mountain faces with remarkably little protection from the elements. Their bodies are suited to an environment where warmth is a luxury and survival depends upon treating the cold as an ordinary part of life.
Wings are also considerably more common among the Aq than among other Aydahar. The steep vertical terrain of their homeland favors those capable of crossing gaps, descending from high elevations, and moving through the mountains by air. The presence of wings does not automatically grant flight, however; Aydahar must still develop the skill through training, and doing so requires considerable patience.
The rarest Aq mutation is frost breath. Aydahar are known to develop draconic breath abilities, with ice among the most common forms recorded, but the Aq have a particular affinity for this manifestation. Their resistance to freezing allows them to employ the power without suffering the consequences that would make such an ability considerably less useful to anyone else.
Aq Aydahar Culture
The Aq Aydahar define themselves through service to the Ice Dragons of the northern mountains. Their relationship with these great wyrms is not simply one of worship or obedience but of stewardship: the Aq tend their dragons, protect their territories, and maintain the hoards entrusted to their care. This reflects the broader Aydahari belief that protecting and tending Dragons is their most important social obligation.
Life among the Aq therefore carries a strong sense of duty. Their settlements exist in places where ordinary communities would struggle to survive, and their people are accustomed to maintaining themselves in conditions that leave little room for carelessness. The mountains demand discipline, and the Dragons demand service. An Aq who fails at either has rather more to worry about than an unpleasant performance review.
The Aq retain the broader Aydahari traditions of loyalty and communal trust. Promises are particularly important within Aydahari society, with the traditional clasping of forearms to form the symbol of infinity serving as both greeting and binding pledge. Their worship of Jormungandr and their reverence for Dragons reinforce this culture of obligation, making service to their draconic patrons as much a matter of identity as occupation.
Within the Confederation, the Aq maintain their own political voice through their Eldest, who holds one of the six seats on the Council of Six Elders. Their representative participates in the governance of all Altinqor, while the Aq themselves remain closely tied to the northern territories and the Ice Dragons they protect. The arrangement allows them to remain relatively isolated without becoming politically irrelevant.
Aq Aydahar Geography
The Aq Aydahar occupy the northern reaches of Altinqor, particularly the highest and most inhospitable portions of the Aydahar mountain range. Their homeland is a landscape of towering peaks, glaciers, exposed rock, and deep snow. It is precisely the sort of country that discourages casual visitors, which suits the Aq rather well. The broader Aydahari tradition confirms that the Aq favor cold climates, while the Aq themselves are specifically associated with the northern mountains.
Their settlements are closely associated with the territories of the Ice Dragons they serve. Rather than spreading across the lower country, the Aq maintain communities in the high mountains where their physical adaptations provide a natural advantage. The vertical landscape also helps explain the frequency of wings among the Aq, as aerial movement can turn otherwise formidable terrain into a series of manageable crossings.
The mountains are not merely the Aq's home but their responsibility. Northern passes, glaciers, and high valleys form part of the territory they guard on behalf of their Dragon patrons. Their settlements consequently function as both communities and outposts, watching approaches into the high country while maintaining the supplies and infrastructure necessary to support the Dragons and their enormous hoards.
The Aq are among the least geographically mobile of the Aydahar. Dragons and their Aydahar attendants are believed to remain in one region for millennia, and only a handful of Dragons have left Altinqor since the Great Erasure. When one does move, its devoted Aydahar are likely to follow.
