The Beodweorges (🔊 BAY-oh-DWORG) are a stout folk who keep to the mountains in the League of Dweorgen Miners territory. Dweorges have a sense of humor, but not when their territory is threatened.
Scientific NameHomo Pumilius Agerus
PluralBeodweorges
PossessiveBeodweorgen

The Beodweorges, or Mountain Dweorges, are a high-altitude substrain of the Homo Mechanicus family, defined by their lofty settlements and cooperative industries. While they share the compact, powerful frame of all Dweorges, they have shunned the deep caverns of the Oradweorges and the churning oceans of the Haefdweorges in favor of Otan’s most jagged peaks.

Life in these thinning atmospheres has fostered a culture that is famously boisterous and community-oriented, where the labor of the day is often synchronized to communal songs and the evenings are dominated by the raucous social life of the tavern. Physically, the Beodweorges are perfectly adapted to the crushing pressures and high-gravity demands of mountain life. Their compact size makes them remarkably agile in precarious environments, and their physical durability is paired with a natural mechanical aptitude.

To navigate the steep, treacherous passes of their homeland, they rely on sturdy, sure-footed yaks. This reliance on traditional beast-of-burden transport stands in striking contrast to their advanced engineering, creating a unique sight: a rugged Beodweorg caravan of yaks hauling high-tech components up a mountainside.

Because the Beodweorges prefer the isolation of the highest altitudes, they have developed a sophisticated mastery of the skies through the use of airships. These vessels are not merely tools for transport but are central to the survival and dominance of the Mountain Dweorg clans, allowing them to traverse peaks that even a yak cannot scale. These airships represent the pinnacle of their collaborative spirit, as clans regularly gather their finest Tinkers, Wizards, and shipwrights to manufacture these massive, sky-faring fortresses.

The production of a Beodweorg airship is a grand, multi-disciplinary feat of engineering and arcane science. While the Tinkers focus on the "elbow grease and steam" of the vessel's propulsion and clockwork systems, the Wizards provide the essential magic and battlefield wards required to protect the ships from high-altitude predators or rival incursions.

This synthesis of mechanical precision and magical shielding ensures that Beodweorg airships are among the most formidable sights in Otan's skies, floating testaments to the industrious harmony of the Beodweorg clans.

Physical Characteristics

Physically, the Beodweorges are the embodiment of "compact power," a hallmark of the Homo Mechanicus strain. They possess a dense, stocky build with a low center of gravity that makes them exceptionally stable when navigating the narrow, windswept ledges of their mountain homes. Their frames are broader than the average human's, built with a skeletal and muscular density designed to thrive under the intense physical pressures of high-altitude living.

Unlike many of the peoples of Otan, the Beodweorges possess both a Heightened Endurance and a Heightened Will. This, many scholars believe, contributes to their famously energetic and restless nature, providing them with both the physical and mental fortitude to endure high-altitude life.

Their appearance often reflects the duality of their lifestyle, rugged tradition meeting advanced artifice. It is common to see a Beodweorg dressed in heavy, fur-lined plate armor while riding their sturdy battle-bred yaks. It's not uncommon, however, to witness a Beodweorg adorned with intricate, clockwork-assisted goggles or specialized tool belts.

Beodweorg Culture

Beodweorg life is built around the mountain and the people who share it. They are famously boisterous and strongly community-minded, with much of their work done to communal songs. When the work is finished, the singing often moves to the tavern, where it becomes louder and considerably less organized. They have a strong work ethic, and a Beodweorg who is unable to mine or fight can usually find some other useful thing to do.

Their society is organized through the Dweorgen system of guilds and clans. Beodweorges traditionally serve as the protectors of the community, while other Dweorg substrains fill roles as miners, craftsmen, and haulers. The arrangement is practical rather than elegant, but it works. Beodweorges have little patience for people who threaten their territory, and rather more patience for a good story about it afterward.

Mountain travel has also given the Beodweorges a taste for engineering. They still rely on sure-footed yaks for the passes, but their Tinkers, Wizards, and shipwrights have built airships capable of crossing heights that even a mountain yak would sensibly refuse. These sky-faring fortresses are more than impressive machines. They are workshops, weapons, and a means of keeping the scattered high settlements connected.

The mountains have produced their own specialists. Kamkorsilar hunters patrol the passes, bringing meat to isolated communities and watching for intruders. Topsiders guard the tunnels and caverns near the surface, while Ozik Mountaineers ride battle-bred yaks into places most creatures would rather not visit. Beodweorg shamans tend to the spiritual and physical needs of those who make their homes on the rugged hills.

Beodweorg Geography

The Beodweorges live among the highest and most rugged regions of the Dweorgen lands, particularly in the northern Quarrylands. They favor jagged peaks and lofty settlements over the deep caverns preferred by some other Dweorgs. The air is thin at these heights, but Beodweorges are naturally suited to it and can remain there for long periods without the difficulties that trouble others.

Their country is a place of steep passes, narrow ledges, and high-altitude mines. It is difficult ground, even for people who have spent generations learning how to cross it. Beodweorgs are compact and sure-footed, with a low center of gravity that serves them well on windswept ledges. A battle yak is considered a useful companion in such places, provided it has not developed opinions about the route.

The highest mountains are connected as much by the sky as by the ground. Beodweorg clans build airships to carry people and materials across peaks that cannot be reached by road or yak. Some of these vessels serve as flying fortresses, while the great Sky Forges process mined materials without ever needing to touch the ground.

Below these heights lie the tunnels and caverns around Beodweorg settlements. The Topsiders defend these near-surface passages, while hunters and mounted warriors keep watch over the exposed passes above. Thus the Beodweorg lands are not simply mountains, but a layered territory of mines, caverns, passes, and skyways, all defended by people who have little interest in giving any of it up.
