| Scientific Name | Homo Pumilius Spelaeus |
|---|---|
| Plural | Oradweorges |
| Possessive | Oradweorgen |
The Oradweorges (Homo Mechanicus Spelunca), often known as cave dwarves, are the most reclusive of the Dweorgen substrains, living exclusively within the subterranean reaches of Otan. Many individuals within this substrain spend their entire lives without ever witnessing the surface world, finding spiritual and physical fulfillment in the deep caves they call home.
They maintain a deep, ancestral devotion to Thor, whom they imagine flying through the unreachable sky while they preserve their own sanctified sense of family and community underground. Though they are isolationists, they are vital to the Dweorgen Mining Guild, as they specialize in the extraction of extremely rare minerals and gems that cannot be found anywhere else on the continent.
Physically, the Oradweorges are distinguished by their dark brown complexions and a striking, unexplained propensity for white hair, though rare individuals may sport red or black locks. To survive in the absolute darkness of their environment, they have developed heightened vision, and their society has produced legendary "Brutes" warriors of such singular strength that a single individual can stymie the progress of an entire army in the narrow tunnels of the deep.
While they trade with surface-dwelling kin for agricultural goods, they are largely self-sufficient, sustaining themselves on protein-rich mushrooms and subterranean fauna such as lizards and insects. Though primarily cave-dwellers, they also serve as expert outfitters in high mountain passes, providing specialized gear and sure-footed animals to travelers brave enough to navigate the sun-scarred surface.
Physical Characteristics
Oradweorges share the compact, powerful build common to all Dweorges, but their bodies have adapted to a life where space is scarce and the light is usually absent. Their dark brown complexions are almost universal, while their white hair is so common that it is regarded as characteristic of the substrain. Red and black hair occur, but rarely. Their physical strength is considerable, and their balance and sure-footedness serve them well on uneven stone and in narrow passages.
The darkness of the deep has shaped their senses as much as their bodies. Oradweorges possess heightened vision that allows them to navigate places where surface-dwellers would be effectively blind. They are also remarkably capable in confined spaces, where their compact frames give them an advantage that larger peoples quickly learn to respect.
Among the most formidable Oradweorges are the Brutes. These warriors are renowned for extraordinary strength, and in the confined passages of an underground settlement, a single Brute can become a problem for an entire army. There are few places where numbers matter less than they do in a tunnel barely wide enough for two combatants.
Culture
Oradweorg culture is built around family, community, and the deep places they call home. They are the most reclusive of the Dweorgen substrains, and many Oradweorges live their entire lives without seeing the surface. Their isolation is not regarded as deprivation. To an Oradweorg, the caves are home, and the world above is simply a distant place where other Dweorges happen to live.
Their devotion to Thor is particularly strong. They imagine their god moving through the unreachable sky while they remain beneath the earth, preserving the families and communities entrusted to them. This faith is closely tied to their sense of place. The deep earth provides shelter, food, minerals, and a community that has little need to venture beyond its boundaries.
Despite their isolation, the Oradweorges are an important part of the Dweorgen Mining Guild. They specialize in extracting rare minerals and gems found deep beneath Otan, trading their wealth with surface-dwelling kin in exchange for agricultural goods and other necessities. Much of their food comes from the caves themselves, including protein-rich mushrooms, lizards, and insects. When Oradweorges do venture toward the surface, they may also serve as expert outfitters in the mountain passes, supplying travelers with specialized equipment and animals suited to difficult terrain.
The Oradweorges are not entirely sealed away from the surface. The Topsiders are among those who make the journey upward, operating in the tunnels and caverns near the surface to protect their subterranean homes. Other Oradweorges surface to hunt, trade, or acquire food. They may be reclusive, but even a people who prefer the dark still have reasons to visit the light.
Oradweorg Geography
The Oradweorges live beneath Otan, in extensive networks of caves, tunnels, and subterranean settlements. Their homes are found throughout the Dweorgen territories, but their deepest settlements are far removed from the surface world. Unlike the Beodweorges, who favor the highest mountain peaks, or the Fyldweorges, who make their homes closer to the surface, the Oradweorges have built their lives into the earth itself.
In many places, Oradweorg settlements exist directly beneath those of their Fyldweorg and Beodweorg cousins. Whether the Oradweorges established their settlements first or came afterward is not known. There is, however, a persistent suspicion that some of the topside settlements were deliberately constructed above existing Oradweorg tunnels, giving their Dweorgen inhabitants an escape route and a protected supply line should a settlement ever come under siege.
The relationship between the surface and the deep is therefore more complicated than it first appears. What looks like an isolated mountain hold may have an entire Oradweorg community beneath it, connected by passages that outsiders rarely see. The Topsiders guard the tunnels and caverns nearest the surface, while deeper communities remain almost entirely within their own subterranean world.
The underground reaches of Oradweorg territory are rich in the minerals and gems that sustain their place within the Dweorgen Mining Guild. The deeper they go, the farther they move from the world above and the closer they come to the resources that made their substrain indispensable. For the Oradweorges, there is little contradiction in this. The best things are simply found where most people are unwilling to look.
