The Scraefaelf (🔊 SKRAH-falf) are the most uncommon of the Sweardaelf clans. Rarely seen on Otan's surface, the Scraefaelfes prefer to live underground.

The Scraefaelfes (Homo Parvus Spelancarius) are the rarest and most reclusive branch of the Sweardaelf family tree. While their cousins flourish in the forests and harbors of the surface, the Scraefael have made their homes in the deep earth since before the Great Erasure. Their most striking physical trait is a universal albinism; while this condition appears sporadically in other races, it is present in nearly every member of the Scraefaelf population.

Scraefaelfes possess unpigmented, translucent skin that often reveals the delicate network of veins and arteries beneath, paired with stark white hair and eyes that range from pale pink to misty grey. Although they can acclimate to sunlight given enough time, they find the surface world harsh and unpleasant. Any Scraefaelf venturing above ground for more than a few moments will be heavily layered in thick, dark clothing, broad head coverings, and specialized eye protection to prevent severe burns and light sensitivity.

In stark contrast to the eccentricities of their surface kin, Scraefaelf society is remarkably grounded. By human standards, they are perhaps the most "traditional" of the Sweardaelfes, building stable, welcoming communities that lack the aggressive "borrowerism" of the Borgainaelfes. Unlike the Karangi, Otan’s other famous tunnel-dwellers, the Scraefaelf do not possess a pathological desire to hoard or fetishize the minerals they uncover. While their lifestyle naturally brings them into possession of rare gems and precious ores, they view these as practical resources rather than objects of obsession.

When a Scraefaelf chooses the life of an adventurer, they typically gravitate toward the martial classes. Despite their diminutive stature, they possess incredible upper-body strength, a byproduct of generations spent carving homes out of solid rock. Foes who underestimate them based on their size often find themselves facing a deceptively powerful and deadly opponent. Furthermore, those who pursue the path of the mage find that their heritage grants them a natural affinity for the arcane; Scraefaelf casters possess significant advantages when weaving Earth Elemental magic, commanding the very stone and soil of Otan with an instinctual ease that other mages struggle to replicate.

Physical Characteristics

The Scraefaelf share the diminutive build common to the Sweardaelfes, standing at an average of roughly 120 centimeters. Like their surface cousins, they possess large expressive eyes and elongated pointed ears that extend perpendicular to the head. Their hands and feet remain proportioned much like those of humans, with dexterous fingers well suited to the delicate work of tinkering, smithing, and other crafts. Beneath the unusual coloring, their basic physiology remains remarkably close to the human baseline.

Their albinism is the defining feature of the substrain. Their skin is so lightly pigmented that it can appear translucent, while their hair is almost universally stark white. Their eyes range from pale pink to misty grey, and the combination makes them poorly suited to the bright world above. Even the glow of a forge can be painfully intense, which is why many Scraefaelf smiths work behind dark-lensed goggles.

Life underground has given the Scraefaelf senses better suited to darkness. They possess superior low-light vision and can move through dark corridors with ease, while some individuals develop an even rarer ability known as a “heat sense.” This allows them to perceive the infrared radiation given off by living creatures and even volcanic vents. It is a useful talent in a place where seeing what is in front of you is not always the same thing as seeing what is there.

Scraefaelf Culture

Scraefaelf culture is notably practical by Sweardaelf standards. They are less interested in the elaborate schemes and eccentric pursuits common among their surface cousins, preferring stable communities, useful work, and the simple pleasures of good company. They are generally kind and generous, although strangers may initially find them shy or aloof. Once comfortable, a Scraefaelf is quite happy to spend an evening sharing stories and riddles over a few glasses of Maeroq.

Their cuisine reflects the resources of the deep. Cave crickets and mushrooms find their way into meals, while the larvae of Rock-wasps are considered both nutritious and worth the considerable danger involved in harvesting them. Rock-wasp hives also provide honey and fine vellum for trade, while the insects' naturally sweet venom is distilled into Maeroq, a favored drink flavored with herbs and flowers. Surface foods, ales, wines, and spirits are equally welcome below, where they are treated as exotic imports rather than ordinary fare.

Scraefaelf craftsmanship is directed toward making life underground easier. Their smiths and Tinkers work with Power Crystals traded from the Fyrthaelfes, producing both weapons and remarkable practical devices. Machines such as the empowered dirt digger and twisty tunneler can excavate new passages with the endurance of many miners, while larger mechanisms maintain the circulation of clean air and water throughout their settlements. The Scraefaelf seem particularly pleased when an invention solves a mundane problem; apparently, making a tunnel larger is sometimes more satisfying than making a sword deadlier.

Their spiritual life retains some of the mystery found elsewhere among the Sweardaelfes, but Scraefaelf Shamans are especially inscrutable to outsiders. Their rituals may involve body paint, smoky fires, unusual music, and long ceremonies whose meaning they are not inclined to explain. Holy Days are important occasions for the community, with the final week of the Otan calendar celebrated around life, abundance, family, friendship, and the gifts of the gods. Scraefaelf Bards often play a central role in these celebrations, bringing their otherworldly talents to communities that otherwise spend most of their lives far from the surface.

Scraefaelf Geography

The Scraefaelf inhabit the deep earth beneath Kiskentay, rarely appearing on the surface except when trade or necessity demands it. Their settlements are not laid out like surface towns but spread through warrens of tunnels and chambers carved into rock and dirt. Homes, shops, inns, taverns, workshops, and communal spaces are all incorporated into these subterranean networks. The result is a world of passageways and chambers rather than streets and buildings.

Light is treated as a resource that must be carefully managed. Scraefaelf warrens are generally cozy and dim, illuminated by bubbling alchemical light tubes and phosphorescent fungus rather than bright lamps. Their settlements are consequently very different from the sunlit fields and forests occupied by other Sweardaelfes. Even their industrial spaces must accommodate sensitive eyes, with smithies requiring special protection from the glare of heated metal and open flame.

The Scraefaelf continually reshape their underground homes as their communities grow. Their powered digging machines allow them to open new tunnels and expand existing warrens far more efficiently than manual excavation alone. Mining crews follow behind the machines, clearing rubble while carefully checking the excavated stone for useful ore and precious stones. What begins as a simple extension of a dwelling can therefore become another chamber, another workshop, or another passage in an ever-growing subterranean settlement.

Despite their isolation, the Scraefaelf are not cut off from the surface. They trade for goods and materials unavailable in the deep, while exporting Maeroq, honey, vellum, crafted goods, and other products of subterranean life. Their engineers also maintain the systems that make permanent habitation underground possible, particularly the machines responsible for clean air and water. The Scraefaelf may prefer the darkness, but they have learned that even the darkness needs plumbing.
