Thermal Burn

From Will to Power Wiki
Body Damage

Exposure to fire and many spells are known to deal fire damage.

Thermal Burn Damage is physical damage caused by exposure to extreme heat. The heat can burn the skin and underlying tissue, damage internal organs, ignite clothing and equipment, and eventually destroy the body itself. Unlike Electrical or Chemical Burn Damage, which have more specialized mechanisms, Thermal Burns are the direct consequence of heat being transferred into the body.

Thermal Burns range from brief contact with a very hot object to prolonged exposure to flames, lava, or supernatural heat. Fire is particularly dangerous because it can continue burning as long as fuel and oxygen remain available. Magical fire and other supernatural sources of heat can be even more dangerous, particularly when ordinary materials or environments provide little protection.

Thermal Burn Sources

Thermal Burn Damage can come from natural heat, combustion, magical effects, or anything else capable of raising the temperature of living tissue to dangerous levels. The source may be a concentrated attack, an environmental hazard, or simply an object that has become dangerously hot.

Examples include:

  • Fire and flames
  • Magical fire and supernatural flames
  • Lava and molten materials
  • Extremely hot metal, stone, or other objects
  • Magical spells that generate or project intense heat
  • Creatures capable of producing or projecting extreme heat
  • Fires, furnaces, volcanic environments, and other areas of extreme temperature

Thermal Burn Saving Throws

Outside of combat, Agility is often the best defense against Thermal Burn Damage. A character may step away from a flame, avoid a falling hot object, escape a burning area, or otherwise prevent prolonged exposure. When exposure cannot be avoided, Endurance becomes the more important defense, allowing the body to withstand extreme heat long enough to escape.

In some situations, Strength may also be relevant when a character must physically force open a barrier, move debris, or otherwise escape an environment in which heat is becoming dangerous. In combat, however, Saving Throws do not ordinarily replace the combat rules. Combat actions, attacks, defenses, and the circumstances of the encounter determine whether a thermal attack reaches its target and how its effects are resolved.

Thermal Burn Mitigation

Thermal Burn Damage can be mitigated by preventing heat from reaching the body, reducing the intensity of the exposure, or removing the character from the source. Thermal armor is particularly valuable against sustained heat, while magical protection can provide defense against temperatures that ordinary materials cannot withstand.

Active forms of mitigation include:

  • Thermal armor and heat-resistant protective clothing
  • Shields capable of resisting extreme heat
  • Potions that provide protection from heat or fire
  • Magical protection against heat and flame
  • Protection runes and magical artefacts
  • Moving away from the source of the heat
  • Leaving a burning area rather than remaining within it
  • Extinguishing or suppressing the fire
  • Creating a physical or magical barrier between the character and the heat

Thermal Burn Related Conditions

Severe Thermal Burn Damage can cause Severe Burns, damaging skin and deeper tissues and potentially leaving permanent scars. Prolonged exposure may also cause Heat Exhaustion or Heatstroke, as the body's ability to regulate its temperature is overwhelmed. These conditions can continue to worsen even after the character escapes the immediate source of heat.

Extreme exposure may cause Unconsciousness as the body's vital systems begin to fail. A character caught within a continuing fire or surrounded by extreme heat may suffer repeated or continuing Thermal Burn Damage until the source is escaped or extinguished. Severe or prolonged exposure can ultimately result in death.
