When the early humans of Otan first encountered Dragons, they were quickly subjugated by the sheer physical strength and staggering power of these ancient beasts. However, it was not the beasts' raw muscle that truly captivated humanity, but rather their numinous, reality-warping powers. Seeking to understand how these creatures commanded the elements, human researchers made a profound anatomical discovery: a Dragon's extraordinary powers originated from a specialized, hyper-dense organoid nested deep within the posterior region of its skull.

Over countless generations, Sophists and other learned scholars dedicated their entire lives to studying these complex organoids. They meticulously mapped how these biological anomalies interacted with and altered the fabric of the universe. In time, as if sensing this critical mass of concentrated mortal comprehension, the cosmos itself began to shift, manifesting a new path of power and granting the very first Archetype of the Wizard to those who had unlocked these biological secrets.

Modern Wizards have become absolute masters of the four distinct Draconic organoids, allowing them to perfectly replicate, and occasionally even improve upon, the elemental output of ancient dragons. However, the path of the scholar does not stop at mere mimicry. In more advanced tiers of study, the legendary Aether Wizards have mastered powers that entirely transcend the limitations of the draconic organoids. Their magic does not mimic the beasts; instead, it makes elegant, deductive inferences into the foundational workings of the cosmos based on everything humanity has already studied.

At their core, Wizards study. In their relentless grasp for ultimate power, they willingly absent themselves from the comforts of conventional society, retreating into deep academic exile to observe the intricate mechanics of the universe. It is a grueling, isolating existence, but the rare few who possess the intellectual stamina to stay the course are rewarded with the greatest, most devastating magical powers recorded on all of Otan.

The Wizard in Society

Wizards are an inherently bookish archetype who generally shun the chaotic pleasures, political dramas, and superficial distractions of normal society. They view the daily gossip of city dwellers as fleeting noise, choosing instead to locate quiet, isolated environments where they can study their grimoires and experiment with volatile magic without interruption. For a Wizard, a day spent in absolute solitude deciphering an ancient formula is infinitely superior to a day spent at a lord's banquet.

Those who possess the necessary financial means or state funding will inevitably purchase or construct towering stone structures. These Wizard Towers are deliberately designed to protect their sensitive, high-stakes experiments from outside interference and keep the scholar comfortably above the mundane noise of the streets. Furthermore, these towers serve a highly practical architectural purpose. In a pinch, their reinforced vertical designs allow the Wizard to safely vent catastrophic magical explosions straight into the sky rather than leveling the surrounding neighborhood.

Because of their reclusive tendencies, Wizards are rarely called upon by the general public for mundane matters. However, when their native cities are threatened by an invading armada or a monstrous cataclysm, and all conventional hope is lost, the desperate populace will systematically annoy a Wizard until they finally act. This is a highly perilous strategy for the invaders; a city's antagonists rarely survive the absolute, unbridled wrath of a brilliant academic who has been rudely interrupted in the middle of a delicate calculation.

When they do choose to interact with the world, Wizards mostly converse with other Wizards to exchange technical notes or with the city's resident Sophists. Their relationships with Sophists are famously strained and dripping with mutual passive-aggression. The Sophists, being non-archetypal, are still somehow intensely arrogant about their theoretical knowledge; yet, despite this friction, Wizards tolerate them because Sophists are usually laden with rare books, historical maps, and invaluable reference materials.

Wizard Schools

Rigorous, centuries-old written traditions strictly govern the academic advancement of a Wizard. Every spell, formula, and failure is meticulously recorded in dense institutional libraries. This vast web of knowledge is split among five prestigious Wizard Academies, each dedicated to mastering a specific phase of universal matter or aethereal mechanics.

Academy of Energy The Academy of Energy trains its students to manipulate the raw, kinetic forces of thermodynamics. Scholars here study the acceleration of particles, learning to summon roaring infernos, manifest localized arcs of lightning, and drain heat from the atmosphere to flash-freeze entire battlefields. They are the most overtly destructive of the academies, translating pure mathematics into overwhelming combat artillery.

Academy of Solids Focusing on the dense, unyielding aspects of the draconic organoids, the Academy of Solids dictates the laws of mass, density, and terrestrial matter. Wizards of this school learn to reshape the earth, open sudden chasms beneath enemy lines, and fortify structures with diamond-like durability. Their magic is heavy and permanent, specializing in changing the physical geometry of Otan's landscapes.

Academy of Liquids The Academy of Liquids focuses on fluid dynamics, cohesion, and changing states of moisture. Students master the subtle currents of rivers, oceans, and atmospheric humidity, gaining the power to summon crushing tidal waves, whip up blinding downpours, or draw the water straight out of a target's biological cells. Their tactical approach emphasizes adaptation, redirection, and relentless, flowing pressure.

Academy of Lividity The Academy of Lividity is a highly specialized and intensely studied school that focuses entirely on the manipulation of atmospheric gases, vacuums, and toxic pressure states. Scholars of this academy learn to manipulate the air itself, creating suffocating pockets of pure vacuum, steering localized hurricanes, or weaving dense clouds of corrosive, lethal vapors that can choke out an entire vanguard in seconds.

Academy of Aether The undisputed pinnacle of academic achievement is the Academy of Aether. Bypassing the material constraints of the physical organoids, these elite arcanists study the invisible, overarching fabric of the universe itself. Their powers allow them to bend spatial coordinates, manipulate gravity, tear open localized rifts in time, and manifest pure, unformatted energy drawn directly from the cosmos, rendering conventional defenses utterly useless.

Wizard Powers

The practical powers of a Wizard are defined by an unparalleled ability to systematically manipulate the fundamental elements and rewrite local physical laws. Through years of studying the draconic organoids, a Wizard can spontaneously reshape a battlefield, calling down meteor strikes from the Academy of Solids or manifesting sweeping arcs of electricity from the Academy of Energy. Their magic is calculated and precise, turning the surrounding environment into a weapon through sheer cognitive force.

Beyond simple elemental devastation, their advanced understanding of universal mechanics allows them to breathe artificial animation into inert materials. A Wizard can weave complex kinetic webs to bind fast-moving targets, project multi-layered kinetic shields that deflect physical payloads, or manipulate light waves to render themselves completely invisible. When properly prepared, a Wizard acts as a living nexus of universal laws, capable of altering mass, velocity, and temperature at a moment's notice.

Crafting

While other archetypes craft out of economic necessity, the Wizard views crafting as the ultimate, physical proof of their theoretical calculations. They will systematically craft or enchant all manner of high-level magic items, including scrying mirrors, storage rings, and focused casting staves. However, within the academic culture of Wizards, the absolute apex of crafting prestige is the construction of Golems; monolithic, artificial entities forged from stone, iron, or dense materials and brought to life through intricate runic programming.

Among practicing academics, the quality of a Golem is not measured merely by its physical size or the thickness of its armor plating. Instead, universal bragging rights are dictated entirely by cognitive sophistication. The greater the Golem’s independent autonomy, they say, the greater the intellect of the Wizard who crafted it. A Wizard who can forge a Golem capable of real-time battlefield analysis, independent problem-solving, and complex self-repair sequences is universally recognized as a titan of the archetype.

The Wizard and Power

The immense cognitive strain of channeling raw universal forces through the human mind requires a highly structured, intellectually stimulating environment to achieve a complete recovery. To completely recharge their mental focus and replenish their drained magical reserves, a Wizard must retreat to their personal Wizard Tower.

Far from a simple bedroom, this sanctuary is a self-styled, high-level apartment engineered for maximum intellectual luxury, stacked with thousands of rare books, active scrying arrays, complex astronomical charts, and specialized magical testing gear. Within this secure, quiet cradle of knowledge, a few days of undisturbed reading and calculation will fully restore their power.

When traveling far from their primary sanctums, a Wizard cannot access the profound restoration of their tower, but their hyper-disciplined minds possess methods to prevent total magical exhaustion. While on the road, they can actively recharge their lesser spell slots by studying compact magical tomes by the campfire or meticulously working their Wizard Boards—intricate, hand-held mathematical devices used to calculate cosmic alignments and realign the mind's internal energy currents. These scholarly exercises keep their baseline survival powers fully functional until they can return to a true academic facility.

Wizard Factions

Due to the immense scale of their research and the national security implications of their power, Wizards typically align themselves with one of three primary structural factions:

Libraries: These are massive, independent institutions completely devoted to the deep, exhaustive gathering of knowledge on one or more esoteric topics. They operate as global repositories where Wizards can pool resources, store ancient scrolls, and collaborate on world-changing magical breakthroughs away from state interference.

Governments: While conventional wisdom dictates that individual Wizards possessing the destructive output of an entire army should absolutely not govern mortal societies, the reality of Otan is complex. Occasionally, a highly pragmatic or ambitious Magister will assume direct political leadership over a city-state, ruling with cold, geometric logic.

Advisory Boards: Operating behind the scenes, these organized coalitions of high-ranking Wizards wield immense political influence. Rather than ruling directly, they provide calculated incentives, economic magical boons, or subtle technological deterrents to mortal governments, ensuring that local rulers follow the collective wishes of the academies.
