The Suu Qurilissi (🔊 SOO-oo KOO-rih-LEE-see) are created the sky and the sea, so legend says. They have an affinity with the Flow elements, Air, Water and Ice.
Scientific NameHomo Elementalis Aqua
PluralSuu Qurilissi
PossessiveSuu Qurilissi

The Suu Qurilissi (Homo Elementalis Aqua) are the silent architects of Otan’s atmosphere and hydrosphere. According to the most ancient legends, it was this specific strain of Builders who fashioned the sky and the sea, molding the primordial mists into the structured world of the Flow elements: Air, Water, and Ice. In the era of creation, they were responsible for the grand design of weather patterns, the formation of the vast oceans, and the crowning of the northern peaks with eternal glaciers. While they once numbered in the thousands, their presence has all but vanished from the modern world, leaving the natural cycles of Otan to run on the momentum of their ancient labor.

The power of a Suu Qurilissi is rooted in a total affinity for the fluid states of matter. Unlike a sorcerer who might manipulate external forces, these Builders command the elements through a semi-divine internal connection, allowing them to shift their own physical form into rushing wind, liquid water, or jagged ice. This mastery historically allowed them to regulate the rains and guide the clouds, acting as the living circulatory system of the planet. Today, however, these feats are considered mythical, as the few remaining Suu Qurilissi are lost to the deep places of the world, dormant and forgotten.

The only confirmed living Suu Qurilissi in post-Erasure history is a male known as Tartilgan. His discovery was entirely accidental; he had been entombed within a massive shelf of ice in the treacherous Soltustik mountains for an untold number of centuries. He was eventually recovered by a group of Garis spellcasters during a clandestine mountain mission. Though he was restored to health, he woke with the characteristic amnesia of his kind, possessing the power to freeze the air or vanish into a mist but carrying no memory of the gods he once served.

Tartilgan’s current whereabouts remain a subject of intense speculation among the Sophists who track such anomalies. If he still lives, he likely moves among the coastal or mountain communities of Otan, perhaps serving as a quiet protector of a fishing village or a lone hermit atop a frozen spire. His existence serves as a haunting reminder that the very air the people of Otan breathe was once the deliberate work of a people who have now become little more than ghosts in the machine of nature.

Physical Characteristics

Like every Qurilissi, the Suu are physically indistinguishable from baseline humans, sharing the same range of coloring and features as the people around them, with nothing in their resting form to suggest the dormant Flow elements beneath their skin. A Suu could sit across a dinner table for years without anyone suspecting what they're capable of.

Their discovery is where the pattern turns strange. Some are recovered from glacial shelves in the high mountains, frozen so completely into the ice that they're mistaken for a trick of the light before anyone realizes there's a body inside. Others are cut free from the bellies of whales or deep-sea leviathans, somehow preserved rather than digested, an outcome even the Sophists struggle to explain. Either way, once freed they revive as a healthy adult with no memory of how long they were lost.

Their command over Air, Water, and Ice can manifest at any depth, from a minor resistance to cold to a complete transformation of their body into one of the three states. A Suu in full ice form becomes hard as tempered steel yet stays flexible and, strangely, never feels cold to the touch, while one who turns fully to water can let a blade or arrow pass straight through them, slowed but harmless.

Suu Qurilissi Culture

The Suu carry no culture of their own into the world, so like their Aya and Jer cousins, they take on whatever culture finds them first, split cleanly by where that discovery happens: the high, cold peaks or the open water below them.

Those recovered from mountain ice tend to fall in with the explorers and spellcasters who dug them out. Kymbat Tulki, freed from the northern ice of Shuwalu by Tozakh explorers, took up both the Rogue archetype and her rescuers' homeland as her own, now championing Shuwalu's causes with no memory of ever having belonged anywhere else. Tartilgan, recovered by Garis spellcasters deep in the Soltustik mountains, is said to have drifted into the coastal or mountain communities of Otan in much the same way, whether as a quiet village protector or a solitary hermit.

Those pulled from the sea instead, whether from a leviathan's belly or the wreck of some forgotten vessel, gravitate toward maritime peoples already comfortable with the ocean's dangers: sea dwarves, sea goblins, and the coastal defenders who make a living fighting off the same monstrous depths a Suu was once swallowed by. For a person built from water and ice, there may be no homecoming quite like the sea.

Whatever their rescuers, a Suu's old training has a way of surfacing even when nothing else does. Dayana Kedergi, whose origins remain unrecorded, works today as an independent contractor whose ice-flesh and near-total undetectability suggest a set of skills she never consciously learned. It's a pattern the Sophists have started to notice: a Suu may forget everything about who they were, but rarely everything about what they could do.

Suu Qurilissi Geography

A Suu Qurilissi can turn up wherever ice or ocean has had centuries to keep something hidden: the glacial shelves of Otan's highest mountains, or the crushing dark inside a leviathan far beneath the waves. Between the two, there's very little of Otan's cold or deep places that can be called fully searched.

Once revived, most stay close to the world that produced them. A mountain-recovered Suu tends to remain in high, cold country among whoever pulled them free, while one recovered from the sea gravitates toward coastal, river, or lakeside life instead, following the water wherever their rescuers happen to call home.
